Looking for video footage of trains
« on: June 19, 2012, 04:23:47 PM »
Hi, all. Working on a music video for an original song, and I'm trying to find video footage of a moving freight train (circa 1950 or later). It needs to be high quality (stable shot, preferably HD), and the person providing it must be the copyright holder.  This doesn't mean the person has registered the material with the copyright office.  Rather, it means the person providing it, and giving permission for it's use, shot that footage themselves.  Can't pay you anything for it, but I will credit anyone providing footage.  Thanks.

icepac, you worry me :rofl .

rpm, checked it out. Nice shot of that steam loco, but unfortunately too grainy for our needs (8mm). Did you film those yourself? Thanks.

Try this:

He is using it in a video. He needs a release from the owner. That is why he's not going to a stock video company.

Hit it on the nose. Can't release it to GAC or any other major outlet if I don't have copyright or license, and I'm on a budget.

Need the video footage sometime within next 30 days to finish it. We're in the studio today doing some greenscreen work, so we've got some time as we pull this all together.  Looking for shots of trains approaching and then passing camera POV, from different angles, and at moderate speeds (30 to 60mph, I should say).  Honestly, I'd love shots of SP 4449 in it's red, white, and blue American Freedom Train livery, but haven't found any privately owened video that is of sufficient quality (most is on 8mm). Thanks again.

Sabre do you have a cam to shoot it yourself? What kind of train do you need? I have a vacation coming up and metra tracks nearby and can shoot you something with one of my XL2's. I got out of video before HD however but I can shoot high quality DV. BTW Im still lovin my CD I bought from you. Like music there has to be stock royalty free video material that you buy commercial usage rights along with the video.

Thanks, Rich52. Glad you're still enjoying it. Still writing new stuff all the time.  Looking for freight train footage. Need HD if at all possible, since the live portion will be shot in HD.  DV will be last resort.  I've got a volunteer who's going to try his hand at it (someone on the msg board here), in case I can't find any already existing footage I can use.  But I appreciate the offer, and will let you know if things change.

I've got a train track on the backside of my pasture and an HD video cam. I just don't know the schedule. It's pretty random.
Guess I could take a cooler full of beer and wait.  ;)

Just tell me if I can help my friend. I used to do a lot of greenscreen work with wedding shoots and its a lot of fun. It just happens that my business was winding up right when I wanted to wind down so I never invested in HD cams. Another option is to simply "rent" a cam. If your near a decent sized city MR google could probably find you a production house that does daily rentals. Its not difficult and they could probably set you the manual controls needed for your shoot if your not familiar with the settings. Good luck.

You can buy a HD cam for under $100.
