Just ordered it today and it is showing up for delivery tomorrow from Memphis (thanks Newegg); anyway I got this one Intel 330 Series Maple Crest 120GB SATA III and from what I have read they seem to be pretty straightforward but I was wondering about tips and tricks with them if any were needed.

Heya Reschke,

I recommend visiting the Intel product page of the particular ssd and then review its support page and possibly the Intel forums..... Search for tips / procedures for installing new Intel ssd's

Hope this helps.          I recommend updating the firmware before installing any OS , etc... First.. if it needs it

Couple things:

Make sure the MB is updated fully, and can support SSD speeds.
Using a 6gb SATA drive in a 3gb port can cause trouble.
SSD's have firmware that needs to be updated as well.

Get ready for speed. I installed Windows in 9 minutes boot to desktop. I boot from pressing the power button to desktop in ~7 seconds. Restarts take about 21 seconds.

Thanks for the information guys. I have an EVGA P67 SLI motherboard and from what I have read it should be good to go. I have downloaded the newest firmware and BIOS updates for everything just in case.

http://www.evga.com/products/moreinfo.asp?pn=130-SB-E675-KR

Also on the firmware I noticed that the latest one they have was from last September for that drive? Should I update before I install Windows or should I install Windows first?

It will barely hold Window 7 Home Premium & updates. You probably will have difficulty copying an image of previous system because of limited space.   :bhead

I have 2 computers each using a crucial M4 series 128 gb for the main OS drive

I have not experienced any problems regarding shortage of hd space on either pc, in the last year+ that I have been using them....  1 is on an I7 Intel build, the 2nd is on an amd 3.6 ghz quad core build.....

I do use separate data/storage on each pc, though

Win7 HP takes about 4 gigabytes of space. He'll have over 100 to spare.

Might be a good idea to remove crud after service pack installs etc. updates using ccleaner or similar, they can amount to gigabytes worth of unnecessary data.

Win7 Ultimate on my previous HDD was no where near 120GB in its footprint on that drive....no idea where that thought of not having enough HDD space came from there.

aces high with its constant micro writes on the hard drive will highly stress your SSD drive and may reduce it's life span.

Sluzzy recommends not to use a SSD to play aces high.

Not using my SSD for AH...besides the cost of them is still too high to replace my old 1TB drive for anything other than booting up and some other critical backups like documents and photos that are a one time write for me.

Yes Skuzzy has warned the AH Community several times over the years about AH and installing it on an SSD

here is a thread talking about SSD's from last year:
Aces High and the Hard Drive
http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/index.php/topic,325389.0.html

here is what I posted:
I am only coming up on 6 months for my Crucial m4 128 Gig SSD

its rated endurance is 72 TB over 5 years  which equals  40 GBs a day for 5 years....... since the firmware rev 9 update its performance has increased a good bit with Crucial claiming seq Read @ 500MB/s ( mine is around 526 MB/s ) and seq Write @ 175 MB/s ( mine is around 248 MB/s )  on my AMD Phenom II 975 x4  build.....  with AH installed on the SSD

I have (2) of these same SSD's in RAID 0  on my i7-2600K  but I have not bothered to run any indepth tests in this raid setup.......... I did run them when it was just a single SSD, and got close to the same as with my AMD......

using Windows 7 64 bit, it has  GC ( Garbage Collection), Trim & SMART  abilities............ and I have not experienced any slow down as of yet...... ( I play more steadily on the Intel PC than I have on the AMD since July......

now, I do recommend people doing a reboot more frequently than you might when using a old platter/disc  type  Hard Drive......

I currently have my AMD hooked into my 4 way KV switch with my old work PC and 2 other pc's all sharing same keyboard/mouse/monitor/speakers via USB/DVI  hookup cables...... )....

will let y'all know in another 6 months or so how things are going....... if interested.....

edit:  I also must note that I do not play Aces high as FREQUENT as I used to do......... and for the majority of people I would probably suggest they install AH on a secondary data drive,  let their SSD be used as a booster for it....

TC   ( btw - I was aware that running AH on my SSD wouldput more wear / use on it faster, it was the 40 GB a day for 5 years endurance claim by Crucial that let me go ahead and decide to install Aces High on the SSD )

it has been another 6 months and a newer revision of firmware that improved the ssd's I am using.....
granted I slacked off of AH due to RL around 1st part of April..... but my comps running SSD drives as the main OS and AH installed........ seem to be just as good if not better now, than the day I first installed them....

edit:  I also have taken my i7 Intel pc off of the raid 0 setup of the (2) Crucial M4 128GB SSD drives and moved back to just 1 SSD drive, so I could have my SSD tools/features working ( garbage collection/trim/SMART etc.....) plus using just 1 SSD is fast enough, using 2 in RAID 0 is stupid overkill and a waste on this computer in my opinion.......

also, the Crucial website is listing the Crucial M4 128GB SSD @ $125.99 ........  seems the price has dropped a good bit since I last checked.....

YMMV

hope this helps
