G940 Rudder spiking fix
« on: June 28, 2012, 06:01:48 PM »
If you have an issue with the rudder pedals on a Logitech G940 where the rudder input is "itchy" or erratic, check the connections at the pot. A sure sign that they are loose.. monitor your input on the controller mapping within AH2, then wiggle the wire at the strain relief where it enters the pedals. Note: you may have to move the pedals one direction or another. If you see that it has an erratic signal simply remove the bottom cover (about 16 or 17 small phillips head screws) round silver pot at top center is the one. Remove one wire at a time, slightly tighten the connector with needle nose pliers or equivalent and reinstall. This has also cured the constant need to recalibrate the rudder. Go figure!

I used to have a G940 and had terrible rudder spiking, which occurred only on my game computer (tried on my laptop and worked fine).  They sent me a replacement set, which also spiked. They took them back and refunded my money.  I liked em a lot except for the spiking.

It's unfortunate that you never found a G940 that worked completely satisfactorily. Deductive reasoning suggests that your particular problem was something different, and the support forum at Logitech was full of posts stating that they need another, newer firmware update and or software update. However, deductive reasoning is sometimes wrong. It might be possible that the malfunction did not occur when used on your laptop because of the installation venue. Ie: the cable may have left the strain relief in the other direction etc, making what was a loose connection otherwise ok. I am of the opinion that this problem will eventually occur with all G940's because; 1. The use of a spade connector instead of a soldered connection and 2. the pot is not hard mounted in the pedals base but rather resides in a cavity which allows (albeit slight) movement of the pot.

Another common reason for spiking is dirty pots, even when new. Sometimes just taking the pot out and rotating it past it's usual limits can clean them up. My G940 pedals got spiky a couple of times and just kicking them back and forth a few times was enough to clean them up. Same with Logitech pedals. My Logitech throttle quadrant spikes on all 3 pots but it's minimal so I'm not in a hurry to pull it apart and fix it. I used to take my CH pots apart and clean them when they spiked. When I rewired my CH pedals for my Cougar I used spade connectors and never had a problem with them not being soldered, I just had the pinched wire that eventually broke issue.
