Perspex Clipboard
« on: June 29, 2012, 01:50:47 AM »
Any possibility we might be able to have a clipboard of slightly more robust construction. Maybe made out of steel or board thick enough to prevent a severe retinal roasting when flying sunward?

Since the dawn of civilization mankind has yearned to blot out the sun.

True, but philosophy aside, I think the OP is more of a desire to fix an physically painful, annoying, unrealistic, and unneccessary characteristic of the current clipboard.  +1.

the notepad/kneeboard is to be used as a user interface to access game functions and options, NOT as a sunscreen.

Sunglasses would be handy. They served in numbers at squadron strength. It warrants addition to the game.

That's not the point; who is talking about using it as a sunscreen?  The point is that you should be able to look at the #*&!! clipboard in a pleasantly-readable mode, regardless of the direction in which you happen to be heading.  Especially so since the current game day puts dawn/dusk during prime playing time for me.

It used to be able to block the sun. People were using it as a way to block out the sun thereby robbing someone, who took the time to setup properly and dive in from the sun, of their advantage. Thus it was changed to what we have today.

And IMHO it should stay the way it is. If you want to read it while flying into the sun, look left/right/back/up/down and read it.

Yes but they would have to be perked.

reasonable point. however wouldnt you say that rl pilots would use sunspecs, their hand, or maybe their clipboards to allow them to see better into the sun. brit pilots had little shields projecting obove tgeir goggles precisely for ths reason.

I wasnt making the original suggestion for any reason other than wanting to look at the map comfortably, people will always "game" it whatever way they can, I completelty disagree with any F3 views for example. but really, a well set up and planned attack out of the sun is not going to be foiled by someone opening their clipboards and taking the time to place them in order to block the sun and still give vision to fight. That really is unrealistic :old:

Whether they were or not, it can't have been much of a game advantage unless flying in a straight line, and in any case it is probably realistic and historical to do so.  Read Boyington's popular autobiography "Baa Baa Black Sheep".  He used to check in the direction of the sun by covering it with his thumb.  If I can find it, I will post from the chapter in which he says this.

No it's not.  I often study the map at length when approaching a fight, when not close enough so I am willing to take a chance on being bounced.  In such cases I fly on autopilot, and give my hands and feet a rest.  "Looking backwards" defeats the purpose of this.

If your on auto, use the arrow keys to slide your head around so that one of the cockpit bars is blocking the sun. As long as your on auto and don't touch your views you can study the map as long as you like.

So since we can already block the sun with a cockpit bar, you're in favor of perspex clipboards because...
