The currently produced Mustang owes its heritage to the 1969 Fastback, according to Ford.

This was true for the 2010 body style change which ran through 2012. The 2013 which is now onsale Evolves the design with que's that are more from the '70 version, note the corner lights are outside the headlamps, and the concave tail light bezels set into a flush rear fascia. The '69 had a concave fascia with flush lights. Retained from the '69 is the Four headlight set up, although this is only on the GT. Everyone thinks the Four lights looks more agressive, so they now differenciate the GT from the base car. The body colored and, more pronounced grill surround, are from the previous GT500.  :salute

that would make it the same as a 70. 69/70's only had minor styling changes.

Correct.  I was just spouting off what the Ford design group had said what was used for the inspiration.
