Hey Jeep guys and/or kayakers- roof racks??
« on: July 09, 2012, 06:05:48 PM »
Do any of you know where I might be able to find a used roof rack or of a manufacturer who makes kayak/canoe racks that will just clamp onto the rollcage of '98 Wrangler?

Wife and I are looking to start taking the kayaks with us when we go camping so we have more options, but we're both not exactly thrilled about the prospect of dropping between $300 and $500 for a rack base and then an additional hundred or two for the kayak mounts, but so far I'm having no luck finding an affordable and reliable option.

The idea of spending more on the gear to carry the kayaks than we spent to buy them is somewhat aggravating...

A guy in our club had I believe a garmin rack for his two kayaks. However his is fully external. I can't think of one designed to attach to the roll bars because then the top stays down/home for those that need it.
For our weather it is finally to the point my top and doors have not been used since Saturday. :)

Good luck on the rack though. Probably have to adapt one that attaches to a roof rack.

Who puts the top up on a Jeep in the summer?  :headscratch:

Mines been sans roof and doors for two months now. Just throw a tarp over it with a couple of bungee cords if it looks like rain.

Who takes a boat out of the water in the summer?  :D

Main reason is ease of access. Mine does a lot, need to make it usable for the whole family. I don't like to clean a soaked interior unless it is unavoidable. Those days, like my CJ, are gone.

I just use foam pads that fit over my roof rack cross bars (not a jeep) and then use straps and stern/bow tie downs. Not sure if that will work for your setup.

This is the foam pad I have:

And this is basically like the complete setup I use (not the same brand bought my stuff from AustinKayak.com):
