CPU compare

Im looking at upgrading..................I know that if I went the Intel route I'd get at least an I5...is there an AMD cpu which is comparable?  I havent been following CPUs much recently and am not "up" on the latest and greatest.

I'm an AMD fanboy and I tell people to buy core I5 2500K's....that's how AMD is competitive in the gaming cpu's

I looked at these charts, while they give a good indication of the power on the cpu's, I don't think it reflects very well how they will perform in games. Games generally don't scale well on the multiple cores of modern cpu's, and prefer a high clock over a big number of cores.

also, most games on high detail and resolution get VGA-limited so in full-HD and maxed out, with an average VGA, there wont be much difference between my Phenom 955 and an I7.

J/K but you're confusing terminology here. VGA is the display interface. You're talking about GPU or graphics card limited, right?

This.  Number of cores does little if anything for gaming performance.  Clock speed is way more important.

GPU, FSB/RAM speed, and CPU clock speed are the three biggest things IMO for gaming.  More or less in that order, though it's debatable I'm sure.  Having one of the three super high won't give you much benefit if the other two are much lower.
