Falcon 4.0? Free Falcon
« on: July 16, 2012, 03:15:08 PM »
Is there a free falcon still that I don't need to have falcon 4.0 to play?  If not, are people still developing the falcon 4.0 game?  I keep seeing videos for it, but I am looking for a way to start playing it if I have nothing.  I don't have the origional game, I have no clue where to get the mods/updates needed for it to work.   Does it run on Win 7 x64?

Anybody that can help?

Free Falcon is in fact...free and people are still developing it - year ago Falcon 4.0 was released by the developers who kept updating falcon 4.0, basically they threw everything into a box so you didn't have to go through the terrible patching.

Problem with patching is one mistake screws up your game and were talking 10 or so patches.

If you look online or at your local store you can pick up falcon allied force http://www.lead-pursuit.com/products.htm

I still fly this in fact today, works fine on Windows 7.

According to the link you posted Allied force isnt compatable with Win 7.

To use Falcon BMS, do I need the origional game?  Its very hard to find.

Is free falcon any good?  Whats the learning curve on these games?

What a coincidence; I just dusted off my X52 and pedals today to do some flying on Allied Force. The learning curve is pretty steep, but once you can effectively manage the avionics, navigational and weapons systems, and airplane, the game is a blast.

I would suggest simply buying Falcon Allied Force, it comes with the game and everything is patched up to date.

Its excellent, the learning curve is far more steep then Aces high is - you have serious work to do to learn the game - its certainly not easy at all, there is "Easy mode" or realistic - Easy mode is arcade as it gets, Realism is serious stuff as one instructor for AF once praised "Its close as you can get".

I played for years, if you are interested in getting the game ill be interested in flying with ya, but be warned I haven't played in years now :) I started Falcon in 1998? around same time as AW before coming to AH.

I am considering it, but I really don't want to spend any money before the end of the month as I have some things coming up.

Does anybody play Free Falcon?  Not really concerned with multiplayer, just looking for a new challenge.  I have downloaded and installed the latest version, just havent had time to start it up and play with it yet.

The best Falcon is BMS 4.32, now at "update 2". Noticeably better FM, visuals, etc. You need an original unpatched Falcon install (not Allied Force!) and BMS from www.benchmarksims.org.  I found it also here:

http://www.veterans-gaming.com/download.php?list.76

You should also install the example "mfd ini file", otherwise you will find your MFDs unconfigured and showing "blank" if you do not configure them pre-flight. This is because a real pilot would carry around his configurations in his data cartridge (as explained here)

Then you can apply the updates (unusual way BTW) if you want, although they are minor fixes IIRC:

http://www.veterans-gaming.com/download.php?list.93

As for documentation, I don't know the easiest way. Falcon original manual is the basics, after that I don't know the path you should go (I remember superpak 3 manual was important for me, but I don't know if it has been superseded). There are lots of tutorials on Youtube BTW. Also, in the install, there are tutorial missions, for example to start the airplane, a feat in itself :).

As BMS requires an original falcon install I undusted a 141 MB falcon 4 zip I downloaded from "the underdogs" many years ago when it was available... and it worked. I would share with you but...!

I haven't played "real" missions, too serious and complicated for me. Also having a good HOTAS makes a difference, to fine and quick control of radar elevation and azimuth, for example (something "HOTAS warthog" doesn't have, BTW :( ). I'm content with practice missions ("tactical engagement"): starting up the plane, navigating, landinding in various conditions, shooting the different ordinances, refueling mid air and some dogfighting... I found them very interesting in themselves. Anyone with an interest in how a 4th generation fighter works should check the sim.

Just as a matter of interest: bms 4.32, if I'm not mistaken, is the first ever falcon that simulates simultaneous guiding of several AIM-120 AMRAAM to different targets.

Well I don't want to buy Allied force right now, I havent been able to find a copy of falcon 4 anywhere.  I am going to have to go with FreeFalcon atm I guess.  Anybody have any tips for free falcon?  I have the latest version installed, the cockpit files and the theatre files.  Have to get some time to start it up and give it a shot.

Any tips or things I should do at the start?

Man, just trying to figure out what all the buttons are for all the controls is fun!  Hope to get some more time with it soon.  Will be trying allied force and if I can find a copy of falcon 4.0 somewhere I will try to bms version.
