Deputies shoot, kill man after knocking on wrong door
« on: July 17, 2012, 01:29:48 PM »
It's a tragic situation. I always wondered what might happen if the police came to an innocent person's house. Law officers have a right to defend themselves. Same goes for home owners.

Pointing a gun straight at someone's face a you open the door is as smart as banging on a door at 0130 without identifying yourself.  :uhoh For all I know, maybe the cops lured to cover their butts, they might have tried to force their way in when the poor bastard opened the door.
Dang Florida man, screewed up stuff happens there.

I thought it was standard practice to cover the exits and then announce yourself as a police officer. If that was done this may not of happened.
This is also an example of why you should get firearm training if deciding to defend yourself with a gun. Never pull a gun if you arent ready to use it. Defensive training would not have you standing in a doorway exposed.
If they were armed Home invaders he would be dead also.

  Just a sad story.  :pray

I'm not defending anybody here, but I think the guy should not have opened the door. If strangers are knocking on your door give 911 a try.

Do you guys remember that mayor in Maryland who's house got raided by police because someone mailed him a package of pot.  The police stormed the house, shot the guys two dogs and handcuffed him, his mother and law and wife.

Police are no more than human. Sad things like this can and will happen as long as there are poorly trained police on the street.

Since the deputies did not identify themselves they should be found at fault and charged with murder. They were worried about their safety and no one elses.

I'm all for the 2nd amendment and protecting your house and property.

Sure seems a bit extreme to open your front door pointing a gun though...frankly not very smart.

If I was suspicious of a knock at the door, I wouldn't answer it by opening it, but by calling out 'Who is it', while maintaining a defensive position in the house with my firearm.  In reality you lose any tactical advantage by opening the door and exposing yourself.

Or another idea is maybe call 911 if your suspicious.

It also seems strange that the police would not identify themselves if they are going to knock on the door.  I mean if it is a no-knock warrant where they have to barge in and catch everyone by surprise is one thing.  But if your going to take the time to knock on a suspected killers door why not identify yourselves as police.

This sort of thing happens all too often.

Granted, not always with the same tragic result... thankfully.

The cops have a job to do, they had just better be kicking in the right door is the real issue. If they kick in the wrong door (without properly identifying themselves) and are greeted by gunfire then they are going to have a bad day.

Hell, everyone involved is going to have a bad day.

....This is almost ignore worthy...

They were chasing someone who attempted to kill someone.
Said person then parks his bike outside of this guy's house.
The police (trying to not let the world know they were there for obvious reasons) then knocked on the door and this guy decided to open the door with a gun pointed at the cops. I would have fragged him too.

You're trained that when someone points a weapon at you, you take them down. Especially if your chasing a potential murder suspect.

Hell my neighbors next door have a hole in their house from a shotgun blast that was fired by a police officer. Why? Because my neighbor is a moron and was walking around outside with his shotgun talking about killing everyone. He's lucky they didn't frag him then and there.

Funny, a colleague of mine was just telling me about that last week or the week before and I instantly thought of that when I began reading the articles on this.

I believe there was a baby upstairs as well i the mayor's case...

I'm not buying it.

Sounds too convenient a story that he opened the door with a gun pointed at their face.

I suspect he either simply had it in hand and the cops saw the gun and shot him without ever Id'ing themselves as cops and giving him a chance to drop it or he asked "who is it?" and the cops didn't reply and forced their way in and he, not knowing what he was facing, had the gun pointed at them.

Until they identified themselves as police, they were just home invaders as far as anyone would know.

Based on what I can extrapolate from so little info, I think the cops are at fault big time here.
