Something everyone should know. It could save your life.
« on: July 24, 2012, 07:31:24 AM »
Having had the unfortunate experience of helping a rescue team pull the bodies of a drowned couple after their car fell into a lake and the pressure between the outside and inside of the car prevented them from escaping... I always wondered what I'd do if it had been me in there.

Today I saw this.. and it is something that could save your life.

I can say as someone who ended up on the roof in the back of a car upside down rapidly sinking in a river in their early teens...that was the last thing I was thinking about

I have a small hammer that is made for shattering glass in each of our vehicles. When you remove it from it's holder an LED light comes on in the handle. It has a slot that has a blade in it that you can slip your seatbelt into and it will cut it. The hammer comes to a small point that is designed to shatter glass either above or below water.

This is close to what mine look like...

If you have electric powered windows. and who doesn't these days, crashing into water will more than likely short the system.

As well as hot coffee catch aprons attached to the seatbelts, accident avoidance systems, and how about something to wake you up if you fall asleep?

How much further towards total pu55ification will the stupid and lazy push?

I'll admit it is slightly above the middle of the scale in terms of borderline paranoid preparedness, but it would be something that if you needed it, you'd be pretty happy to have it.  At least it looks like it would do the job it's designed for.  My only question is, where does one put it in the car?  It wouldn't be much good if you couldn't reach it.

Far less likely to bash your head in during a rollover event and much smaller.

Most of those hammers rattle in the door pocket just waiting to hurt you.

Yup.... I care alot about my family. It's just one more thing I can do to possibly save them in certain situations.

The one mounted my Daughter's camaro is on the side of the center console within easy reach. Her's is safety orange. My Wife's is on the side of her console in her Tahoe. Her's is safety orange.

Mine is located on the side of my console in my HD2500 crew...... two tone grey.

When you remove it from it's holder the LED comes on.

I actually keep a carpenters nail set in the glove box of all my vechs for just this issue. Press the nail set against the glass and it takes suprisingly little force to shatter the window. I (well my son anyway) got to test it out at my local FD when they were doing Jaws of life practice. (friend of mine is the cheif) My son was 8yrs old at the time, and it shattered with very little force.

The amount of force on the tip of the nail set is incredible.

(Image removed from quote.)

Actually they have a nice solid mount where they do not rattle at all. The tool you posted is fine also. It does not have a light or a cutting tool but works on the windows.

didn't Myth busters cover this?
They call it "common sense", then why is it so uncommon?

I have this 1 for work and in my cars. It is easy and fast. It is spring loaded so you just need to press it against the window and the pin fires, my wife is able to use it without a problem. The tool is a combination window punch / seat belt cutter / and small LED light.
