Inactive volcano in the background.

More volcano. The PEE is an acronym in Spanish basically meaning emergency meeting point (at a mine).

I haven't been there before but have had some business dealings with companies that work in the region and have been invited to go. The pictures really do it justice from what I have been told.

Any guesstimate of distane for the mountains in background? Celarly its quite a distance, but its amazing how such a desolate terrain can make things seem so much closer.

Those are the Andes and probably less than 50-60 miles judging by the photos.

Rog, is that "Atacama Road"?

This is some of the wildest natural terrain I've ever seen. It has not rained to any extent in this particular area for thousands of years. It's in the Atacama.

Yes for a portion I was on that road but the pics were taken relatively not far from that route but rather a private road.

Wow, that is some odd terrain. What causes that? Great pics, btw.

They have tried to compare a couple of certain areas of the Atacama Desert, to that of Mars IIRC.   Thought I had read that about it probably 15 or so years ago.   Probably wrong though, something about a salt found on Mars, was also present in the same region of the Atacama.
