Why is the Mosquito Bomber Perked?
« on: July 24, 2012, 10:33:29 PM »
Hi All,

Just wondering why a decision was made to perk the bomber variant of the Mosquito? The decision to perk it, and the fact that it's unarmed and easily caught by the late war fighters seems to have made it a hanger queen.

Thanks in advance.

Get it up to 27,000 feet and you have almost 400mph. Then tell me why they dont perk it...as it would be almost impossible to catch unless you are already in position.

Rare, but yes, I do see them at alt.

Better than 400 mph (408 mph, there-about) at 27k... Unless enemy fighters are close to that height, a tail chase would take forever. They are very tough to intercept when high.. Ask the Luftwaffe.

It is a very fast 4,000lb bomb.  If unperked, what do you think it would be used for?

Also, it is not easily caught.  A Bf109K-4 taking off from an airfield as it passes overhead at 28,000ft would be so far behind by the time it matched altitude that it would need to run on WEP for about 45 minutes to catch up.

I agree that the Luftwaffe would tell you they were one of the most difficult bombers to catch, which was extremely irritating when you consider that they were one of the RAF's most frequently used bombers.

So the consensus is, despite the 4K bomb-load and the time it takes to get to 28K, the fact that they hit 400 mph when they get there makes perking necessary, despite the fact that this also makes them virtually unused.

Ok, any opinions on lowering the perk value to say something between 1 and 10 rather than in the 50 region?

Tanks.

Actually, the only two I've lost were in attacking the city (something it isn't great for, but is kinda fun for historical reasons), once because the city was right next to the Me163 airfield and the other time because it was so deep in it was easy to see where I was heading.

I am still trying to collect some bomber perks to get the Mossie XVI out the hangar. One Boston delivery got me a 1/3 of the way. Need to bring myself to do it twice more...

Ki-67 or G4M1 sorties to kill town centers are the best way to get perks for bombers.  The Ki-67 is more likely to survive and the G4M1 will get more perks if it survives.

Best way honestly is to head to midwar or earlywar when people are AFK on one side, switch countries to the lowest for the perk bonus - find a CV and hit it over and over, you can get 50-100 perks per run.
Only works in bomber mode, but once you get 1000 you can lose a few mossies and B29s without worrying.

I had a P47M chase me for 4 sectors at 27k once, he took off as I was flying about and from 6k back took a few sectors for him to catch up to me, by this time I was already egressing back to my country bases.

He finally caught up to me 4 sectors later (8 total sectors flown at this point).

Its extremely fast and carries 4k bomb - doesn't need guns as its speed is the reason its perked.

I prefer to do it in the LWA where there is a chance at combat.  Yes, it is less efficient, but it is also much more enjoyable.
