Contagion
« on: July 29, 2012, 08:54:53 AM »
Scary movie dude. And one backed by hard science. Its not really a question of "if" ; More like "when". And thats not even counting terrorists. Nature herself is quite capable of taking out a good chunk of mankind.

And people laugh it me for for keeping emergency supplys. Water, food, medicine, dogfood, batteries, lights, ammo, propane....ect

Just wait till the house comes crashing down. Who's going to help you? Government? :lol At the height of AIDS, when they actually knew we really had something, we were hauling bodies out by the hundreds. Back then the Police did all the hauling here. They didnt even issues us gloves or protective clothing. :lol And we had to bag these poor Souls blood and maggot Pies.

Good luck relying on your local Govt. I'll happily rely on myself.

One needs only read about the Bubonic Plague, the Spanish Flu, and the Antonine Plague to see the danger a naturally mutated contagion can represent.

You were hauling out dead AIDS people by the hundreds?  I never saw this on the news.  Do you live in Africa?

But if it wasn't for the Bubonic Plague, we wouldn't have had the renaissance.
If I had a gun with 3 bullets and I was locked in a room with Bin Laden, Hitler, Saddam and Zipp...  I would shoot Zipp 3 times.

Maybe you werent around in 1984 when I started. You didnt have to go to Africa.

In 1986 there were 1 ,000,000 people with the disease in America. Almost all sick and dieing in clusters of three American cities. I was in one of them. There was no treatment. No special teams to haul the bodies away. I was working the largest, and only, gay community in the city. You'd get a call a 25yo man was dead and you'd have to go bag it and haul it. The first to go were the he/she prostitutes. They dissapeared off the corners in a year. The druggies, hemophiliacs, and  promiscuous gay next. After that it crossed over to everyone.

Patient zero and The first AIDs deaths in America were in 1980. By 1986 there were 1,000,000. There wasnt even a test discovered for it until 1985. Yep, those under 40 wouldnt know or remember. But in niche communities back then the disease was a pandemic. Nobody really cared tho cause nobody had to be around any of the victims unless you were in public health or public safety. Families with gay, or drug user, members were to shamed to put up a stink for progress. Besides most of the time it was just a healthy guy who would suddenly die of Pneumonia. They'd be buried without anyone even knowing what they actually had.

Now its a treatable disease. They have even cured people with bone marrow transplants. But back then? It was a death sentence.

The movie freaked me out big time. The wife and I watched it Friday and when at the grocery store yesterday, I bought the biggest bottle of hand sanitizer they had.

Yeah, I saw this movie.  More realistic, I think, than some of the other "killer plague" movies, particularly in how quickly and easily law and order (and freedom) can dissappear.  None of the black helicopter conspiracy stuff so common to most movies of this genre, either.  It also demonstrates why it is better to have a reasonable supply of food, water, medical supplies/perscriptions on-hand (the Mormans recommend 1 year of food).  Not a bad idea to have reasonable means of self-defense, as well, instead of having to forage for a firearm like Damon's charactor does.

AIDs was probably around long before 1980. Before then it was most likely called "bad blood" when someone died.

I believe it didnt even come close to showing the chaos that would ensue. But it was a warning.
