Best choice for Tactical .308 Bolt-Action for about $1300?

I currently have one of these, with a 26 inch barrel:

It's very nice, and great to show off to people, but it's too heavy and too big to be of much use. I paid about $1600 for it, and have put less than 100 rounds through it. It's got a 12 power Nikon Monarch and a bipod mounted on it, both of which I'm going to keep for whatever I replace it with. The trigger is one of the best two-stage triggers I've ever encountered. Zero perceptible creep. It's advertised as a .75 MOA rifle. I've been able to substantiate this claim at the range at 100 yards.

My plan is to trade the rifle in for a .308 bolt action. I already have a Remington 700 with a 20 inch barrel, but want something else along the same lines, although with a full-length barrel. I prefer a synthetic stock and tactical style.

Like I said, I already have a good scope ready to go for it, so whatever I can get for the RRA I'll just put right back into the new one, adding only a set of rings to the cost, at most.

Was wondering if anyone has any ideas. I'm primarily going to be shooting targets with this thing, but would like the option of hunting with it too.

if you are planning on a 500+ yard gun, I'd go with a 7mm mag or .338

for a .308 I personally like the FN A3 SPR (Spec. police rifle) altough it will run you 2900 (thats my local gun shop in southern california)

I have a Sig Sauer SSG in 308 that is a tack driver..........not sure what you want to spend though

I agree with your statement about the RRA triggers.....they are just about perfection.  The only better trigger ive ever felt is the custom Jaeger trigger i have on my Sako (.338 Lapua )

Search at Davidson's, they have a couple of nice FNH rifles in your range, and a couple of Winchesters.

I like to get a good Winchester controlled round feed action and build my own. There are some great barrels out there. You could pick up a nice used rifle and have a company like E.R. Shaw install a barrel and tweak the action.

Nothing over the top. A bipod for comfort and convenience and that's about it. Here's a pic of my Remington to give you an idea. I'd be happy with this exact rifle, only with a full-length barrel.

Definitely a strong candidate. 700s are especially attractive to me because they're so common that parts and mods would never be an issue.

Why don't you just buy a Douglas blank in 22" or 24" and have it mounted on your Remington? You should be able to do that for $500 or maybe less.

Well, I still got that spare Nikon Monarch burning a hole in my pocket. Plus empty space in the gun cabinet.

I was initially thinking about a different caliber, like 30 06 or 300 winmag, but I figured to stick to .308 in order to keep my ammo stores as simple as possible. A very serious gun nut/hunter friend of mine once told me that the most practical gun collection can contain any number of guns, but will stick to the most common calibers found in north America. 9mm for handguns, .223/5.56 for an intermediate cartridge, .308 for full power rifle, and, of course, 12 gauge and .22. Makes things easier if one has to scrounge for ammo in a pinch. With the exception of the Nagant, I've managed to adhere to this philosophy. Probably not forever though.

I've got 22 guns. I probably regularly only shoot 7. 2 .308s,2 .45s,1 .22,1 12 gauge and 1 .223. the rest are occasional shooters like my original Winchester '73 and 41Mag
