Howa Ranchland perhaps? Nice light rifle, accurate as well.

Well then you could always just go a custom gun route. Buy a Rem 700 action, a Douglas or McMillan blank and an after market stock. Have a 'smith fit cut the chamber and fit the barrel to the action, maybe tune the trigger or put on a Timney if you really want to be custom about it. That kind of rig should fit in your price range. The bipod is a pretty standard item, just attach to the forward sling post and go. If the stock is already pretty much fully inletted (assuming wood primarily) then glass bed it yourself with either a free floating or semi supported barrel. I think a fluted or semi tapered barrel will still give you good rigidity and lighter weight than a full bull barrel.

This really isn't much of a tough job for a good gunsmith and will get the rifle you want without having to go full price for a stock one then modify later on.

Take some advice:  You do not need to spend $1300 on a tacti-coolio 7.62 NATO bolt action rifle.  You can spend less than $700 and you will have a rifle that will out perform your human deficiencies.  Spend another $300-400 on a quality scope (no Tasco or other such substandard optics), and another $100 on cheap military surplus ammo for break in and rifle familiarization.  Once you can *consistently* hit the center of the target out to 300 yards and you've had 1500 rounds through the rifle THEN you may step up if you think you need to.  Otherwise you are wasting money.

Back in the summer of 1993 I bought a Savage 112FV in .223 Rem for a few pennies over $300.  It is matte black with a smurfy synthetic stock with a HB25 Harris bipod underneath.  I put a junk 6-24X Tasco on it (upgraded to a much nicer Simmons in 2003 or so) and since then have shot thousands of prairie dogs, a few dozen 'yotes, and countless paper targets.  To this day I still out shoot guys with rifles that are 4-5 times more expensive than mine even by today's standard.  Point being: you NOT look a price being the stamp of "quality".  Be realistic and be smart.  Until you claim nirvana with your rifle your rifle will out shoot you.   :aok

One of those should probably fit your needs, and your budget.

You should know, however, that denying yourself rifle lover's heaven by not owning a 300 Winchester Magnum. I love both of mine.

I might just not deny myself. Anyway, I'll find out tomorrow. Thanks for the links. Checked them all out. Good stuff.

And thanks to everyone else as well.

That's a bunch I want to be around with a gun.  Nice to see the guy in front with his rifle leaning back pointed at his buddy's head.   :huh
