They pilot was the only one hurt & his jaw is no longer wired shut....has some teeth missing, but is up walking & enjoying life. They were 2 EMTs at the airstrip who saw them go down & 3 forest workers at a lookout above them with all their rescue gear. They had their chain saws, got to him within 30 min, cut some trees down so life-flight could get to him, & he was at St. Lukes level 1 trauma suite within a couple hours. 2 plates in his jaw, one in his cheek, & missing teeth. They sure look shook-up. He told me the air just disappeared out from under them...no lift suddenly. He almost aborted because of the lengthy take-off...not uncommon at 6,000 ft, when a gust of wind lifted them up.

He does this all the time...It was a bit late in the Day, it had gotten hot too quickly, he nearly aborted when a gust of air lifted them, he felt once up that he was committed. He's my friend so I'll defend him... :salute

Yea.  It's easy enough to second-guess after the fact.  He was experienced enough to rely on his judgement in this case.  My experience being in a somewhat different environment probably would have led to another decision, but he was the guy on the scene and of course he gets to deal with the consequences of not being right.  Again, I'm glad they all lived and will be ok.
Everyone I know, goes away, in the end.

holy cow! thats crazy!! i'm glad they are all ok! they surely had someone looking out for them that day....my mom always told me to never drive faster than my guardian angel could fly.....looks like their agel was right there with them that day....i'm sure your friend has learned from this and i'm sure this will forever be in his mind. i hope that he will not let this stop him from his love of flying. :salute

With a DA of 10,000, think that question will need some thought
