Panzer III
« on: August 12, 2012, 04:26:58 PM »
Can we have the Panzer III next?

The Panzer III served as Germany's main tank from 1940 to early-mid 1942, when it began to serve alongside upgunned Panzer IV's as what we would now call a battle tank.

It lead the charge through the low-countries and France, fought admirably in North Afrika, and spear-headed the advance into Russia. The last major offensive where the Panzer III was present in large numbers was Operation Citadel, aka the battle of Kursk in July 1943.

Why should we get the Panzer III? Well, several reasons. 1) its historical significance as the tank that led the Blitzkrieg from 1940 to 1943. 2) it would give us most of the components (both visual and in the driving model) needed for a StuG III. 3) the 50mm L'60 is already in the game, in the form of the BK 5 on the Me 410.

I propose we add:

Panzer III Ausf. F: 30mm armor on the front hull, and all around on the turret, 37mm L'45 or 50mm L'42.

Panzer III Ausf. J: 50mm armor on the hull front, 30mm, 50mm L'42 or 50mm L'60

Panzer III Ausf. L: 50mm + 20mm on the hull and gun mantle, 57mm on the turret front. 50mm L'60

These three variants would give us good coverage all the way from 1939 to 1943. They would also give us the chassis to add the Stug III Ausf. A with 50mm armor an the 75mm L'24, the Ausf F with 50mm armor and the 75mm L'43, and the Ausf G with 80mm armor and the 75mm L'48.

The short barreled PzIV already makes a decent stand in for early German tanks in scenarios. Add this and it's just another hangar queen.

the game is concentrated on combat, not on shaking the screen.

oh boy and I thought killing the Panzers we have now with rockets was easy...

Let the panzer III loose and I'll be able to use 1 rocket on each
The boiling pot is put away and the crab has gone back to sea...

Hardly. Even the 50mm L'42 was a better anti-tank weapon. The L'60 could penetrate about 30mm more armor than the 75mm L'24.

So, yeah, it might have the armor of an EW german tank, but it can't hit nearly as hard as the Panzer III could.

Ok...so imagine I'm a complete newbie to tanking, persuade me to take the Panzer III over any other tank.  :headscratch:

Because of the history, and the challenge.

If all you are concerned about is having the bestest and winning with the least amount of effort, you wouldn't drive one.

Some folks actually do like a challenge however.

Consider it was the primary German tank used in North Africa, the Battle of France and active through 43 in Russia, it would have plenty of Special Events use.

Good looking tank too if there is such a thing.

I'd like a challenge, but I'd also like to have a chance.  ;) Good luck getting close enough to dent another tank with this though. Oh, and I consider the T34/76 as the perfect "challenge". Weak gun, weak armor, poor sights, but you don't have to get within poking distance with a stick to kill something with it.  :)

Consider that the challenge for Panzer III crews was getting in close enough to deal with a T34/76.

Consider the rape fest that will be Panzer III trying to get close enough to deal with a Panther or even a Panzer IV.

tankace why dont you stick to wot?  it's free and most tanks are over there.  you still dont have an account with aces high so what gets added or not wont really matter in your case.  this tank basically sucks.  it will be delegated to hangar queen.

I love how all the non-tankers are ragging on Panzer III.

Whats even funnier is when they go on about how it would be too challenging to kill anything, despite the fact that the only contemporary medium tanks that really out-classed the Panzer III was the T-34 and th M4. Aside from them, it would mop the floor with just about anything this side of a KV or a Churchill.

I've killed Panthers with an M8 before. I've killed Tiger I's with an M4(75). If I can do that, I'm fairly certian I could kill a Panzer IV or a T-34 with a Panzer III L.

Oh, and btw, the Panzer III could penetrate the front of the T-34 from 300m and closer. So its not like the thing is invincible, or anything. If they gave it a few APCR rounds, it would get even better.

then why not get an account and show us how it's done?

Erhmmm, so? I killed a 262 with a Ki-61...that doesn't make the KI better than what it is. Just means the 262 pilot was bad, same as those Tigers and Panthers you killed.

And how are you going to get to 300m without being blown to bits? Not through your magical driving skills I hope. If they don't see you, they can still hear you ;).

Too bad we don't have a KV or a Churchill so the only thing the PzIII is going to mop is the dust in the hangar.

Why would it matter anyway? You can't even use the PzIII because you can't even get online.

For once I agree with semp, WoT has all you need and more (no trees flipping 20 ton tanks). It's free and you can play your PzIII there too.

Just because you and a handful of others want to use it in the MA doesn't make it a good addition, waste of resources and time that could go to more important additions that will actually be worth the effort that HTC puts into it.

the game is concentrated on combat, not on shaking the screen.

What would be the appropriate way to fill out the German panzer set for WW2?  At this point it lacks the primary tanks of the blitzkrieg.   Should that part of the war from 39 to 43 just be ignored?
