Steam wont update

ive tried.  Ive gone through and deleted everything related to steam or valve i can find, I guess im missing something.

Yep....done everything I can think of several times.  Downloads and installs fine, but then the updater makes it to 26%,, you know the damn story already

EDIT: By the way, everything updated and runs fine on my laptop which runs freakin vista

I dont believe its relevent to Steam, but do they have a 32-bit and a 64-bit version of it? I have it on my machine, and I went onto the website and didnt see it, but I didnt poke around too much. Only other thing I can think of....but even that doesnt seem like it would matter, but I could be wrong.

Well I finally got it.  Here's what I did.

1 - Install steam from SteamInstall.msi

2 - When you get to the "Im done, but now were going to look for updates" dialog, DO NOT hit "finish." Instead, open the task manager and kill all the msiexec processes

3 - Reboot the machine and enter "safe mode with network support" by hitting F8 just before windows starts to boot

4 - Locate and run Steam.exe, it should complete normally

5 - Reboot the machine and waste the rest of your life playing video games
