NICU is definitely a very heart wrenching place to be.  My son was there for 3 weeks when he was born, and I truly have not felt such pain and heartbreak as when seeing the other little ones in there.  This was back in 02,  and I still remember their little faces.

Shida, good luck to you and yours, I will keep you all in my prayers.  It's good to know that he is eating and his breathing is getting better.

Again, good luck, and stay strong for the little one.
Amazing you could actually recruit that much suck into one squad.
Your Proctologist called, they found your head.

Thank you all for your continued support & interest. We just got back from spending the evening at the NICU. They lost two infants today, not one. That's why they asked us to stay away. There is one room, the bad room, the room you never want to go to where they take the small ones that aren't going to live, and because it was already occupied they made an area of the main room into a second bad room. The second infant was in the bay yesterday next to my son. He and his twin sister were the same size as our son. You're not supposed to look because of privacy but I was rooting for him also. The parents also live in the Ronald MacDonald House, we've spoken. He had a brain bleed and now he's gone. The mother is silently bereft. All the nurses had cried too.

Our wing is very quite now, eerie. Only three babies & one of them full term, and our tiny little son. He sleeps and eats, each mundane day is a victory which brings him closer to a transfer to a lower intensity care unit. Tonight he lay in my arms for an hour outside of the incubator. My heart soared like a Hawk, but it is hard to be joyful on such a day.

 good and bad news.....

when I was younger about 11 or so, my step mom had a sister that had 2 kids, well the sister liked to party and stay up all night, the kids would wake up in the morning and get into everything.... pour out the milk.... dump out all the food....you know trash the kitchen....they were 3 and 2 years old....instead of changing her way, she would lock the fridge, bungee down the cupboards.......well one morning the boy Dennis found some matches.....he was playing with them and lit something in the house of fire......the mom and her boyfriend woke up to a burning house, both of them lived...... when the fireman put out the fire, they found Dennis under the bed dead from smoke inhalation, his sister they found dead in the closet, same thing.... the smoke killed her.......this was shortly after my 14 year old brother had died....it was a tragedy that lives with me to this day.....death of small children is the worst.......the only way I have been able to get by with my brother dieing is believing he was just too good for this world, so GOD had to take him out of it....same with my little cousins.

I wish the best for you and your little guy :salute

I'm sorry if I don't reply or in a timely fashion. I'm very sorry for your loss Ink. If you ever find yourself in need of extra Brothers, you let me know.

Thank you all for your comments, a little quiet update, not so loud that it wakens the demons that take the small ones, but the doctor confirmed today that Tiny Shida escaped his NEC infection unscathed - no permanent damage.

Very boring few days at the moment, the more of these the better...

Glad to hear your son is doing well and hopefully you can bring him home soonest!

My son was born at 26 weeks and spent 3 months in hospital with bleeds, infections and a ligated PDA at 2 weeks old! All those bloody machines bleeping and glowing red were horrendous.

He is now 7 and a stubborn little pain in the arse :-) So stick with it mate as he is obviously a tenacious fighter and will make you a proud father.

Dear all, we had another bad phase, Tiny Shida had an intestinal blockage last week his little body filled with air and swelled up so badly that he had trouble breathing. I didn't want to share the bad news but this is the nature of premature babies, thibgs happen quickly and unpredictably. In my grief and frustration i'm ashamed to say I pounded on a steel locker & dented it in, so helpless did I feel. The doctors couldn't determine the cause, that is scary to hear.

Anyway, once again the little fellow resolved it himself, with a lot of support. While no one was looking and on entral feeding he gained weight, topping the 1600 gramme mark. Last two days we've seen a rapid transformation, much less looking like a bird which fell out of its nest, and more like a proper baby. He's smart as well as strong, wants his breathing tube out & knows how to do it, had to be fully packed in twice now to stop him and he still looks like he was trying to find a solution to the problem.

We no longer plan ahead, learned to very much live in the moment. On this moment all is well.

Sounds like your son is quite the fighter.  Thoughts and prayers with you and your family through this.  You have the right attitude in taking this a day at a time, hopeing you made it through the roughest and it gets easier from here.

Ruined my bloody elbow as well mate

"hope for the best.... expect the worst"

Words to live by!

Because we see him 2-3 times a day, we don't notice the changes so obviously. We were discussing his weight. When he was born he weighed 845 grammes, then he went down to 720, they always do than. Now he's at 1650. We were looking at our most recent pictures and then we compared them with some of the earlier pictures. We both had to cry at the contrast, the poor little spud. His legs were as thin as my finger and he just wasn't ready for this world. How we made it through those earlier weeks I'll never know.

He must be in good health though as he starts to resemble Winston Churchill a little bit, a good metric for any baby  :lol

Just phoned the hospital and he's had a great night, spent half of it off the oxygen because he's mostly been pulling his tube out, sleeping peacefully with his fist strongly clenched around it with a little smile
