I've seen quite a few "book smart" types that are worthless on a fire scene. They aren't the norm but they do scare me.

Being a doc does not make one rich. There are many who are just getting by.

I took it as he was showing the difference between book smarts and common sense/street smarts. Maybe he wasn't.

Many docs get their license overseas where the requirements are far less. Those same docs can use those licenses to get license here.

In any case I have known some really intelligent well schooled folks who were considered intelligent until they got off their narrow path.

I've also known some non-schooled folks who were extremely intelligent.

If you say so.  My point was, everyone has their strengths.  I don't know the first thing about a car engine to the point where CAP would think I was a total idiot if I ever had a car related conversation with him.  But I might think he is an idiot if we had a conversation about structural related things.  Except I wouldn't think that because that has nothing to do with IQ.

See?

Right.  The difference is, if CAP was explaining something vehicle related to you, showing a cause and effect within the realm of automotive stuff that culminated in 'And that's why the engine seized.'  could you follow it and make simple extrapolations from that as to how other similar things might apply in similar situations?  To me, that's intelligence.

Similarly, if you were explaining something structural related, that culminated in 'And that's why the building collapsed.' a reasonably intelligent person could follow that and see why it happened as it was being explained.

Many people one comes across in their typical day just don't seem to be able to logically follow a process where A flows to B and then to C unless they've had years of repetitive training in it.

Rest assured, that doctor was very likely much smarter than you.
And you know my personal life so well how?

Are you assuming that because I served in the USMC that I'm not intelligent? That the degrees I received from the institute I attended mean nothing? Or the fact I'm actually 25% through on becoming a physician (then to finish up and become an anesthesiologist) is just also something to toss in the trash?

The man was a half-wit.

Let me put it in another light: Same doctor; said his house was hot and he could not figure out why. We go in, it took us less than thirty seconds.....he had turned the numbers down on the thermostat but didn't turn it to "cool".

The original post wasn't that he couldn't put it together, it was the fact he couldn't put it together with barney style instructions. Before that night I had never put one together. Had no idea how to. Good thing that piece of paper had pictures and words to show me.

I'm not saying rich, successful people are stupid, but that most of the time it seems they lack common sense. Hell, Dr. Gerald Kadis (look him up on google) is my uncle. Lived down the street from me growing up, and he was always calling my dad and me to help fix small stuff that he couldn't understand. I mean he fixed stuff he knew how to, but if it didn't involve cutting someone's head open, he normally had forgotten how to do it.

I love the man though. Saved my cousin's life when he busted his skull open on a three wheeler and he flew medivac choppers in Vietnam.

Lol relax.  It's always a safe bet to make that a random doctor is smarter than a random 22 year old forum hot head.

Btw, isn't anesthesiology one of the most extremely competitive medical professions to tap into?

They must teach those folks to count backwards from 100. They always ask you to do so too. I think my best was reaching 96 before waking in another room under a self styled tent. :D

Heh.  The last time I was put under, they didn't even get to the 'count backward' phase.  The last thing I remember is, 'Do you have any allergi-' and I woke up missing a vestigial organ with a hole in my side.

So much truth. I had to help a doctor put a trampoline together once. Even with the instructions, he couldn't get it right.... It was sad.

Intelligent or dumb, I don't know, but it sounds like he got you to put the trampoline together.    :D   :bolt:

I know 2 doctors who sacrifice far more than they make. Both have dedicated their lives to others. One is in his 80's, takes care of a few hundred nursing home patient no one else will touch, goes on 2 week vacation to central America, takes volunteer nurses, & donated supplies with him, to do benevolent work in poverty stricken areas...used to go every year...slowing down now. The other takes on as many nursing home residents as he can. The reason no one else will take them is because the Gov't won't reimburse him for his time writing orders, talking to nurses, being woke up at all hours...none of that pays a dime.  :salute

I feel a need to try and top you on this.  Some doctors seem to become clueless when it comes to medical issues as well.  2 examples.

During my time with the NSP I had two experiences with doctors that made me wonder if they were insane or just retarded.

The first incident happened in front of the area I worked at, it had a interstate type highway with grade intersections.  A toyota corolla pulled out in front of a F150 that was traveling about 70mph.  Unlucky for us a doctor happened to stop and help.  After we got the driver out of her corolla and onto a backboard it was time to strap her onto it.  Everything went smooth aside from her left leg.  The doctor kept trying to force her leg straight in order to secure her better.  He failed to take into consideration the fact that she would scream louder every time he tried to straighten her leg.  He also failed to notice the large and bloody hole in her jeans about 6" above her knee joint.  We had words after she left in the helicopter to say the least.

Experience #2.
I separated my shoulder while skiing.  Went to the hospital after my shift ended and got some xrays taken.  Then more xrays.  Then xrays of me holding a bucket of sand with my injured arm.  Every xray photo taken showed an obvious difference between my right and left collarbone.  One side it was flush with the rest of my shoulder, on the other it was obviously above the rest of my shoulder.  He showed my coworker and I the xrays eventually while trying to explain that he couldn't see anything wrong.  He was quite embarrassed when we both pointed to the problem as soon as he held up the first xray.
That was definitely $500 well spent (sarcasm).

I worked for a year in a surgery dept. first as a orderly then as a ESWL tech when my ex told me to get out of the Army or she was going to divorce me .
I watched as a urologist berated a nurse for preparing the wrong side for a  nephrectomy . I lost my awe of doctors when I watched her reach up and flip an X-Ray over pointing out the little metal R was not there . Same doctor started talking to me like I was a dog a few months later . I told him I was looking for a crappy low paying job when I found this one . If he didn't alter his tone and his words I was going to whip his little azzzzzzz . Why is it the worst ones are always such azzz hats ?
