After reinstall, can play offline, but not online
« on: August 24, 2012, 09:31:13 AM »
I recently did the update from August 15.  I ran the game for a few minutes online and everything seemed fine.  A week later, I tried to log on and got a windows error message saying there was a problem with ah.exe.  After reading these boards, I deleted all the shortcuts, did a full reinstall of the game and accepted the new shortcut.  Now, it lets me play offline, but I still get the same error message after trying to log online.  I've checked the install path and the shortcut target.  Can't figure this one out.  Hoping I don't have to do a complete uninstall, full install, create and account etc.!

Sounds like there is a firewall blocking the game from accessing the Internet, or you are running Norton, Avast, AVG, or McAfee and one of them is messing with the game connection.

Do you see the login screen?

I am running Nortons.  I did check the firewall permissions and Aces High is on automatic.  I changed it to allow, but there's a .netruntime optimization program sitting ahead of it.  I tried to move Aces High up so it sits on top of everything, but it doesn't seem to want to do that.  Go figure.  So....How do I turn off the Norton firewall while I'm playing AH?

Yes, I do get the log on screen...when I try to log on, that's when it stops.

Tried two more things.  First, I changed Norton's "Smart Firewall" to off.  Got the same error message on log in.  Second, I deleted AH from the permitted programs, then added it again.  Same result.

I have seen this happen with Norton.  It is not pretty.  The only way others have fixed it was remove Norton, use the tool at Symantec's site to undo the damage Norton does when it installs, then re-install Norton.

Honestly, I am not sure why anyone still uses Norton or McAfee.  Both are worse than any virus your computer might get.

I thought a virus can delete everything on your hard drive or steal personal identification information and the anti virus programs reduce that risk substantially.  Do you not use anti virus programs?  Are you worried about the damage a bad virus can do? :uhoh

Thanks for the quick advice, Skuzzy.  I'll give it a shot over the next day or two.  Its about the only thing that makes sense to me at this point.

I have never used a anti-virus program and never will.  It is easier to circumvent the mechanisms that deliver the virus than to catch it after the fact.

How?
stay off the pron sites, don't use social network sites, don't click on links people send to you via email, and don't use file sharing programs of any kind...just to start.

if you really can't help yourself there are some tools available that can help you circumvent the most common infections...but you still have to know what you're doing to keep your system secure. symantec/norton, mcafee, trend micro and others like them are useless as screen doors on a submarine.

How?

First, it requires discipline.  It requires being paranoid about every click of every link.  It requires software that can pull apart a WEB page and tell you what is going to happen, if you load the WEB page, before you actually load it.

It requires avoiding all Windows based servers.  It requires avoiding sites like Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, Gmail, Hotmail, and so on.  It requires disabling Java for everything and enabling it once you are clear on what the site is going to do.  It requires avoiding email attachments.  It requires an email reader that will only open email in 'text' mode.  It requires blocking all Flash based items.

There is so much more to it.  It is a discipline.  It is about taking control of your computer and not allowing everyone else to control it.

99.9% of the people I know cannot handle it and I am fine with that.  I enjoy using my computer for what I want to do with it and not what others think I should be doing with it.

All anti-xxx software is designed to induce paranoia in the user.  That is how they hook you.  If they really wanted to do it right they would stop trying to "filter" viruses and work on closing the doors than allow viruses in, but then they could work themselves out of business doing that.

Ok...FINALLY GOT THE GAME UP AND RUNNING     It must have been something in my settings file that screwed up the path to the .exe file.  Uninstalled, reloaded, got the game running, then exited, put in hi res and my settings, got the same error message.  Uninstalled, reloaded, no hi res or settings copy, game ran.  Installed my old settings folder...error message.  Uninstalled, reloaded with the hi res pack, but did NOT copy settings.  Game is running fine...but now I have to remap my CH rudder, throttle and joystick after not playing since august.  My muscle memory and brain memory of the settings do not coincide.   :bhead :bhead :bhead  Still, have the game and I'll eventually get the setup right.  Now...onto the sights folder if I dare.
