Maverick;

1.  I do not blame the store in any fashion. In fact, I feel bad the store employee had to live through that, it will make for many sleeplessness nights.

2. This guy had a KNOWN history of mental illness, he has been hospitalized many times for it and should of been under close supervision of a MD. Unfortunately, he couldn't hold a job due to his illness and lost his health insurance because of lack of employment (even cobra runs out eventually). He was perusing disability, but it hadn't cleared yet.

3. I am not labeling him mentally I'll, that diagnosis was given to him long before he entered that gun store.

LOL I loved this part of the article...

We sat down to try to think of the absolute worst locations imaginable to pull out a gun and try to shoot somebody.

    Submarine
    Propane tank storage facility
    The White House
    Spaceship
    U.S. Marine Base
    Krav Maga convention
    Fireworks factory
    Nuclear power plant
    Gun store

Delerium, I wasn't asking to be sarcastic, it was a serious question. Unfortunately what folks understand as mentally ill does not always translate to an adjudication of same. Unless and until a person is adjudicated by a judge as mentally ill (a danger to themselves and or others) their name is not entered on any data base. If they are not entered they can obtain access to a weapon in the same manner as the individual in this thread did. That was why I asked about it. It leaves the folks like the store and other gun shops hanging. The same thing about laughner. Folks said he was "known to be mentally ill" yet no one reported him as such. No one caused him to be evaluated and he certainly wasn't adjudicated as mentally ill until he shot Giffords and several other folks.

DEFINITION OF A VETERAN
A Veteran - whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life."

I only agree when it comes to violent crime and property crime.

Consensual crime makes up the bulk of crimes committed in the US though.
If I had a gun with 3 bullets and I was locked in a room with Bin Laden, Hitler, Saddam and Zipp...  I would shoot Zipp 3 times.

seriously.....what did you miss when Del said he was mentally ill....that makes it far different then the typical scum wanting to hurt others.

yes it does....I am embarrassed I laughed at it.

So he was mentally ill and wanting to hurt others.

Evidently to rent a gun they do not have to go through a security check like you do when purchasing. That may require some changes if that is so.

The shop also failed in their own rules of not allowing folks to carry a loaded rental weapon from the range into the shop.

There are different types and degrees of mental illness. This guy was able to pass himself off as and appear normal enough to rent a weapon.

people who are mentally ill have no control over what they do.....they are not the typical criminal.....and should not be treated as such......(obviously I am not saying they should be able to do anything without consequences)  but they should be taken care off and given some kind of life in a controlled environment.

overall the situation sux....I am not saying the guy who shot him was in the wrong....he did what he had to do......and I feel he was in the right.......

I just know mentally ill people....met too many....and none of them were like the criminals I have met......I feel bad for people like that, I can only imagine what it is like.....

I think we are losing our compassion as a people.....our humanity is slipping away and before we know it there will be no love left in this world.....thats not the world I want to live in.
