CPU cooler question
« on: September 21, 2012, 02:15:37 PM »
As a few of you know my PSU got mad at my mobo and overvolted it a couple months ago. I bought a new setup (Z77/i5 3570k/16GB DDR3/700W PSU) and have the old parts still sitting here. I'm pretty sure the mobo is shot as it wasn't working right with a different PSU connected. My questions are:
I have my old Vendetta 2 (LGA775) cooler that I used on my Q9550. Can't find brackets for it for the 1155 board so I don't think I'll be able to use it. I also have a NIB Scythe Angle B that I want to use. Now the box says AM2+/3, LGA775, LGA1366 compatible. The website says 1156 compatible...from what I read 1155 and 1156 are interchangeable in terms of CPU coolers.

Does this mean that I got the Angle B before it came with 1156 brackets, or are 1136, 1155, and 1156 all interchangeable?

Looks like it...the Scythe site didn't used to have 1155 on there.

I'll have to look tonight...I believe it only came with 1 bracket. Maybe 2 (the other for amd)...

the 1156 brackets are the same as sandy bridge or ivy.   but before you install it look at some YouTube video some aren't so simple to install.

Here are the mounting parts it came with. The left one is AMD for sure...the right one is the normal push pin...middle is...no idea.

try the middle one, only one will actually fit in the holes in your mobo and that would be the correct one.  I wouldnt use the push pins. if you had it in a 775 mobo then it needs the adapter for the 1165.

The center one is lopsided...two legs are longer than the other 2, I'm sure there is some reason for that, but not sure how I'd hook it up if it is that way. My old Vendetta 2 was used for my 775 mobo. This Angle B is new in box.

Edit: Looking at the box would help. Midele one is 478 socket. The push pins are adjustable for 775 or 1366 it says on the box. Does 1366=1156 in terms of hole spacing?

Hmm so this should work...keyword should. I guess I'll have to try it and see.

Yeah my Vendetta 2 doesn't have the adjustable push pins. Hate the push pin setup, but I guess it works.

Got it all hooked up. It was a pretty tight fit in my case but it dropped in. Hopefully the airflow will be sufficient since the fan is at a 45deg angle now.

From what I see and checked in the Internet, the Scythe Angle B will always have the fan in a 45 deg angle. The name says it  :lol ...

The case fan in the rear looks like it is sucking air from the case, blowing it out. It seems to be close enough the cpu cooler to help the airflow through it. I can't see if there's another case fan over the cooler, but if there is, the airflow would be even better. If not, don't worry.

Of course the best way to determine airflow sufficiency is to have a reliable monitoring program running in the background of various processor heavy applications to see how high both the cpu and case temperatures rise.

Yes I know it is supposed t be angled. You can put it on the top and rear too. I have 2 140 exhausts up top and yes the rear is an exhaust.

With all those fans around the cpu cooler should be seated well enough to prevent it flying away with the wind  :D Looks and sounds good. Just for your sanity run some monitoring for a while. And to check that the cooler sits tight on the cpu.

I also have an extra fan next to the cpu cooler but it doesn't seem to help much.

Using CoreTemp I am getting around 25-30c temps idle with the new cooler...stupid me didn't bother measuring with the stock cooler. Oh well, I'm sure it is better.
