New PC..having vid problem
« on: September 30, 2012, 10:44:08 PM »
Alright here we go. Got a new PC yesterday.Dell I660.
Processor
Intel® 2nd Generation Core™ i3
Processor Speed
3.3GHz
Cache Memory
3MB
6G DDR3 SDRAM

Came with integrated Graphics but I put in a
GALAXY GEFORCE GT610
2G DDR3

Here's the problem....I have a good frame rate 59-60 fps. With both object detail and distance maxed out. All boxes checked except "detailed water and terrain". Ran good for a few hours, then it started to get some frame stutters. But my fps stays the same. I've tried off line thinking maybe it was connection, it wasn't. Even if I bring it back down to default, minus "detailed terrain and water" it doesn't improve. Any ideas?

I looked at the same card because I was thinking of doing a build to sell and the tech at Best Buy told me that card was just an amped up 410 and would not be proficient for gaming.

You might want to see if you can return it and get a better card..

The stutters could be related to what is going on around you, and the location in the terrain.  That video card is not going to be consistent as it is using RAM which is not much better (if at all) than regular system RAM.  This is going to limit its bandwidth by a considerable amount, which usually leads to inconsistent performance.

Better to have a video card with less RAM, but faster RAM.

The x10 cards are absolute low-end cards, the higher the second digit the higher the performance segment.
Please avoid cards using just a 64Bit wide memory connection as this seriously hampers performance, especially if your card already operates with slow ram.

PC is going back. Tried a new card, pretty much same thing just different brand, EVGA. Same problem. Tried reformatting, thinking maybe i screwed something up trying to get this straight. No luck. Going to try another DELL.

I couldn't upgrade the vid card on the first one without a bigger power supply. So I figure with the cost of that and the better card I would just go with this.  I just cant understand how the game ran smooth on my 10 year old dell with 1g ram, 2g, Pentium 4 and 256 mb card. Granted I ran it at default settings, and got about 40-50 FPS in the DA, until over the ack ack anyway. But at least it was smooth 95% of the time. Gotta add that it wasn't really playable in the MA.

the problem with best buy brand name computers is that they have the lowest power supply they can find and they have a tendency to not have good airflow so they overheat a bit.  look inside your computer and see how many fans it has.  I bet it's 1 or 2 and that's why your fps go down as they're overheating.  also they have cheaper components.  and if anything breaks on them you may have to throw the computer away as it may cost you more to replace something like motherboard than to build a new one.

Good to hear. I was going to suggest you turn off the integrated graphics if haven't done so.
