P-38 Compressibility flaps
« on: October 04, 2012, 05:04:32 PM »
:airplane: Would love to see Hi Tech add the compression flaps to our 38L's...this feature was added on the real ones due to compressibility problems with the aircraft....sure would save some "lawn darting" I see in the arena's

I do believe what you are asking for is already there, at least on the P38L.  It is that model that has the "dive recovery flaps".  They are not dive breaks, flaps, or anything else.  Their sole purpose is to help the P38 recover from a high speed dive.  I suggest you deploy them prior to obtaining 430mph TAS and do it before you get to 5000 ft of altitude, they need time to work.   :aok

:airplane: Sorry "charlie", not talking about dive flaps....the compression flaps I am referring to are on the bottom of the wing, 16 inches back from wing center and they "pitch" the nose of the 38 up, if you get into compressibility realm and controls quit working. They would pitch the nose up and with a power reduction, the pilot could recover quite well.....Richard Bong, the top rated ace in WW2, used these flaps a good bit in his ACM during the war.

That is what the P-38L has.  It doesn't have "dive flaps" like a dive bomber.

What you are asking for is already modeled in AH.

Like I already mentioned, the P-38L in game has dive flaps to aid in recovering from a high speed dive.

As you can see from the above picture, those are the dive flaps, which is the correct name for what you're referring to.

Actually this isn't true as the majority of Bong's kills were in earlier versions of the 38.  The first L's didn't get there until late and there is a photo of Bong with 27 kills marked on his 38 and it's a J-15

:airplane: Well, I stand corrected! I've tried the "dive" flaps, 6 ways to Sunday, and can't tell any difference with or with-out flap application. Guess I will have to go back to TA and do some more test!

If you're looking for them to eliminate compressability, you're going to be unhappy. They merely raise the speed of the onset of compressability, mitigate to some degree the effects, and aid in recovery.

They work exactly as they should, they even give a momentary pitch up when deployed outside of their normal operational envelope.

By the way, you should not reduce power.

If you're locking up a P-38 in a dive, you're doing it wrong.
