Surviving SR-71 breakup at Mach 3.18
« on: October 12, 2012, 05:42:06 AM »
came across this link on another aviation webforums in a discussion about the Redbull freefall attempt, discussion had turned to the subject of high (supersonic) speeds and their effect on the human body, and the ability of a suit to protect a pilot or astronaut at such high speeds.

read this account, and was completely in awe.

Test pilots for sure had solid titanium balls.

For most people the sky is the limit.  For a pilot the sky is home.

SR-71 was a fantastic plane but traveling at Mach 3.2 right on the edge of a stall made it a handful and dangerous.

Yeah... The hand of God snapped his neck and gently placed him 1.5 miles from a rancher with a helicopter....

...

Amazing survival story for the pilot though. Truly remarkable!
