This week, I are been mostly watching Westerns, well two so far: A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More and next The Good the Bad and The Ugly.

I was wondering if you Americans had favourite westerns that they would recommend? Age doesn't really matter but I'm not so keen on recent films. Better older than newer then.

I have never watched Shane for instance, is that a good one?

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly may just be the best western ever made.

You may also like High Plains Drifter and Pale Rider. Both versions of True Grit are excellent, but I recommend you watch the original first. Rustler's Rhapsody is another great western parody, but not as good as Blazing Saddles.

the 3 you already listed are my favourites I think

I watched 3:10 to Yuma a while back and found it pretty enjoyable, although it's not an old school Western

 Many good westerns,red sun is an old fav,if you like Charlie Bronson.

  High noon is a good Gary Cooper western Or maybe the classic Stage coach.


  Burt Lancaster did a pretty ggod western call Valdes is comming,does a 1500 yd shot with a sharpes,I learned about the speed of sound from that flic!

  I highly recommend Red Sun,a east meets west duster that never grows old for me,Gilda is the only movie I've seen more times than Red Sun!

Man, It's been a long time since I watched some of those oldies, perhaps a Western revival is in order at the hizzy.

Off hand I can think of Red River, Winchester '73, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, My Darling Clementine, Rio Bravo, The Searchers, The Man from Laramie.

Old westerns seem to almost always be more enjoyable than the newer productions.  I did enjoy the recent remake of 3:10 to Yuma, but I've never seen the original.

Since you are enjoying the "man with no name" trilogy, I recomend you watch Once Upon A Time In The West, which is also directed by Sergio Leone.

Shane is very good.

Don't knock the modern western, some of which are fantastic.
Appaloosa, 3:10 to Yuma, Unforgiven, and Tombstone are all worth watching.

Also worth checking out are the shows Deadwood, and Hell On Wheels.
