i don't get it
« on: October 26, 2012, 09:47:25 PM »
so.....me trying to be the overly prepared one in the neighborhood, i get home tonight, and head out to the garage. i fired up my generator. it's a husky 5,000watt. it's been setting since june of 2011, untouched, with half a tank of gas. it fired right up.

i pull out my snowblower, and try to fire it up.....nada. nothing. zilch. zippo. but it'll run if i spray carb cleaner in the intake. primed again, nothing. this has only been setting since the last snow earlier this year. i remembered to put stabil in it. i hadn't done this with the generator. i ended up pulling the carb off of the blower motor, and cleaning it out. it was gummed up like a #$^%.

so what the heck? why on the one where i did things right, it's a pain in the butt, and on the one i got careless with, it fired right up for me??  :bhead

Plastic or metal fuel tank on the snowblower?

EDIT:  Also, are you using an ethanol blend gas?

metal tank on the blower, plastic on the generator. i dunno if they;re selling that blend here in south jersey or not? that is a good point though, as i think they change the blend from summer to winter here too. hadn't thought of that. either way though, i thought that only a few months with stabil run through it would've prevented this.........

We have tons of the ethanol blended stuff here in IA...  It can be a bit corrosive.  It'll play havoc on cheaper metal tanks, fuel lines, and seals.  Stabil will help, but depending on the blend it can still cause issues.  Just a thought.  I always winterize with straight gas and stabil.  Usually does the trick.

It could be you were just unlucky enough to get some bad gas and the Stabil wasn't enough to keep it from gumming up. But, if you fueled them both with the same gas it would blow that theory out of the water.

I clean the carb on everything before I use it from snowblowers to weedeaters.  I have tried stabil, seafoam, and startron, none have worked for me.  here is a pic of my tractor carb last year with startron in it.

I thought a frog layed eggs in it lol

that's almost what the carb bowl looked like on mine, 'cept the stuff was smaller, and almost crystallized. i used an old toothbrush, and carb clean to clean the bowl. the needle valve didn't want to come out....i had to remove it with pliers. i'd have taken some pics, but had gas all over my hands and wasn't gonna touch my camera.

if you run the black fuel line on it you may want to change that out if its been over a year.  My friend 4wheeler started running like crap and leaking gas out of the fuel overflow on the carb, so we took it apart and cleaned the carb.  It wasnt that bad but in need of a good cleaning, so we put it back together and got out in the woods and same thing happened.  so I towed him home pulled it all back apart, and found all this black stuff in the float bowl.  It took us a few minutes to figure out what it was.  The fuel line was falling apart from the inside out we could litterally blow pieces of rubber out the end.  So I went and checked everything of mine, my harley was the same way, the wifes harley was the same, sleds the same lawnmowers the same.  I purchased a couple rolls of transparent yellow excelon and havent had a fuel line issue again
