A community saving sugestion?
« on: April 07, 2001, 11:10:00 PM »
I was wondering if maybe this idea for an in-game feature would help this community any...

How about a text message that would pop up for a player everytime another player squelches him?

Example.. PLAYER1 is trash talking on channel 1. Players GOODGUY, NICEGUY, RESPECT and HUMILITY all get tired of seeing PLAYER1's annoying messages, so they all squelch him.

As each of them enters the /.squelch PLAYER1 command, PLAYER1 sees

SYSTEM: PLAYER1 has been squelched by GOODGUY
SYSTEM: PLAYER1 has been squelched by NICEGUY
SYSTEM: PLAYER1 has been squelched by RESPECT
SYSTEM: PLAYER1 has been squelched by HUMILITY

I think if PLAYER1 saw this type of thing every time he was squelched, he might get the message that people don't care for what he has to say and don't like his attitude.

It would be important that this message was PRIVATE to the squelched player only, as I can already envision someone seeing how offensive they could be to get the "I was squelched the most" record.

What do you guys think?

He might also get pissed, change ID's and tell him off!

A bit exagerated maybe, but seeing that kind of messages does not calm a heart of fire!

Best to just squelch in silence.

Trust me!

Sky Viper.. you can't change your ID in Aces High without starting a new account. I don't think you will see that happen. And if you did, you could just squelch again.

Bad players will get the hint.. Act like a respectable community member or your words will be falling on squelched ears.

Just imagine how fast you would stop ranting if everyone started squelching you out and you saw it happening. This would work real well.

I like this idea, but it also relies on the community policing the community.  That is, it's only effective if a reasonable number of players understand that squelching is the way to punish and/or ignore problem cases and if the squelched person cares.

I hate to say it, but I haven't seen much evidence lately by HTC of faith in the community's ability to censure its own members.

Midnight-

If you mean that the squelched party knows who squelched him, no, don't like it. I have seen that one in action and in my opinion it only makes things worse. Usually one guy then goes off and starts badmouthing the other fellow on open, knowing his buds will say "Hey, he is really going off on you!". Then the first fellow unsquelches, and the fight is on again.

There is a fundamental flaw with the squelch thing that is missed by many- squelch only treats the symptom. The problem is the conduct of the players to begin with. Squelch is a nice compromise if the community understands that there are still limits to what behavior is allowed. Instead, people have used squelch as an excuse to behave any way they like. "Hey, if people don't like the way I act, they can squelch me." Let's not kid ourselves; the squelch thing has not improved behavior, if anything it has made it worse.

Sometimes I have to spank my children. Not often, but often enough they know they will be spanked if they get out of line too far. Maybe I should just talk to them and never hold the spanking over their heads like I sometimes do, but sometimes that's all the kids understand. If they won't respect me and my authority, won't accept reasoned direction, and ignore common sense and decency then I am forced to use whatever means at my disposal to effect the change I feel is necessary. I don't enjoy it but it is my responsibility to do so.

I wouldn't simply ignore them. That sends entirely the wrong message and does nothing to correct abherrant behavior. This has always been the way I have thought about squelch.

It's not necessary to implement this function.  Those that want to squelch in silence can currently do so.  Those who want to make a statement can easily send a private message to the effect of "I'm going to squelch you now" and then do so.

Right on Kieran.

If all parents were as concerned and responsible as you are, we would have far fewer problems with folks in AH.

I also agree with your thoughts on what squelch does, and does not, accomplish.

I probly should just stay out of this but... I have never squelched anyone.   I see no need.  I like to be so busy that I don't really see ch 1 (kinda hard these boring days) but even if I do... I think some of the more ignorant stuff is kinda funny.   we have some pretty bright guys here... certainly we can defend ouselves and humiliate a couple of village idiots...  even if they do have a union and shop stewards in AH.

I don't really think this community needs saving.

You've got a point here Kieran, HTC should start spanking anyone who is naughty.  And when they are finished, they can spank me... <gratuitous Monty Python reference>

I alwasy squelch it anyways.

Hans.
