LVT(A)4 Loadout Update
« on: November 01, 2012, 06:59:24 PM »
Add to my wishlist an ordnance update for the LVT(A)4.

From:  http://2ndarmoredamphibianbattalion.com/amphibious-tank/

"LVT(A)4s, loaded for combat, carry 125 rounds of 75mm ammunition (50 rounds of HEAT, 70 HE with M48 fuse, 5 smoke)" -  this would be my preferred loadout on the LVT(A)4.  HEAT rounds might give us a bit better chance against enemy GVs, and having the smoke rounds available lets us at least try to screen the troop carriers heading for the beach.

I agree and wished for the LVT(A)4 to have the ability to load AP or HEAT rounds as was done during the war.  The LVT(A)4 was designated as an amphibious tank and only later did it receive modifications (think around the time of the Peleliu invasion) to its sighting system to allow the pack howitzer to be used as an indirect mobile artillery platform.

I think HTC would be better of adding the variant with the M3 Stuart turret instead of adding HEAT rounds for the LVT-4.  I'm not convinced the HEAT rounds would be worth it seeing as how the sights are good for nothing but lobbing 75mm HE shells.  The 57mm of the M3 Stuart would at least take care of the M18's and M8's with ease, the Panzer IV's and M4's within 800 yards, and otherwise be a PITA for defending ground forces.

I know there were HEAT rounds made for the 75mm, but I have to wonder just how much they were issued.

Regular issue to the amphibious tanks such as the LVT(A)2 and LVT(A)4 and were useful in both engaging enemy tanks and fortified positions like bunkers and pill boxes.

While at it, as mentioned in another thread, the ability to use the PT spawns?

Either way, it would give the LVT(A)4 a slightly better chance against land tanks.  Slightly better beats the current, no chance. :)

In addition for LVTs to be able to use PT spawns, I'd also like to see the addition of the LVT(A)1 with the 37mm and 4x .50 cals.

The guns in the pics on the deck of that LVT look like .30 cals.

I'd use it for sure. :x  The recoil on it shouldn't be as bad as it is with the 75mm, so deacking with it from the sea will be easier.

I'm not too keen on letting the LVT's use the PT spawn, they were not meant for open water.

And as far as using the LVT's as support AFV's for infantry, I say no doubt.  They did that job in the PTO very well, but that doesn't change my doubt of how often they were issued and used the HEAT rounds as compared to the 75mm HE mainstay against bunkers and fortifications.
