An Experiment...
« on: November 04, 2012, 09:35:10 PM »
I had a lot of fun tonite with LW arena being down.   A lot of good fights, with people flying things that they wouldn't be using in LW.

My wish is that we try an experiment.   We start a tour out in 1940 - early war plane set.   Each day, we advance the calendar by three months and introduce the aircraft that were available at that time.

Day 1: January 1940
Day 2: April 1940
Day 3: July 1940
Day 4: October 1940
Day 5: January 1941
Day 6: April 1941
Day 7: July 1941
Day 8: October 1941
Day 9: January 1942
Day 10: April 1942
Day 11: July 1942
Day 12: October 1942
Day 13: January 1943
Day 14: April 1943
Day 15: July 1943
Day 16: October 1943
Day 17: January 1944
Day 18: April 1944
Day 19: July 1944
Day 20: October 1944
Day 21: January 1945
Day 22-30: April 1945 and Later

So basically what you get over the course of a month long Tour is a constantly shifting set of available planes for the first 3 weeks, with the last week being the full late war planeset.

Now I know everybody has their favorite LW ride, and it is possible the world may actually come to an end if you can't take up a P-51D, Spit XVI, or LA-7.  However I think a LOT of people had a lot of fun tonite taking up midwar rides, and this experiment preserves all the furballing action and gives us some VARIETY for a change.

And so why not just bring lots of friends and visit those of us who long ago discovered this fun in MW and EW?

what you're asking for is a rolling plane set...won't happen in the main arena, especially the late war. the majority of the players don't like forced limitations.

Love the idea, but too many whiners for HTC to implement.

So people that like to fly late war birds wouldn't be able to fly 3-4 their plane 2-3 weeks into the tour?  If people can't fly the plane they want to fly, they won't fly at all and in most cases will eventually quit.

Given the numbers that we saw in MW last night, I'm not sure that would be the case.  I saw a lot of 51D drivers having a lot of fun in the 51B, and we had plenty of PJ drivers running around as well - I'm sure these are the folks that would be running away in 51Ds and laying waste to bases in P38Ls if LW was open.  We regularly get big numbers in FSO, flying things that nobody in their right mind would take out in the LW arena.  The reason that works is that the planesets are balanced - you don't have to worry about your Spit I or 109E4 suddenly getting blasted apart by an La-7.

I suppose another option would be to fold EW and MW into a single arena and try the rolling planeset idea on that - with only 2 arenas open (LW and RP) maybe we would get enough numbers in the rolling planeset arena to make it worthwhile.  I think it goes a long way towards making a more dynamic arena - and with all the WW2 aviation history geeks we have here, I can forsee a continual "discussion" (argument) about what is the best plane available at any given time.

I think it is worth a try - the LW arena gets a bit stale after a while.

Please don't. The "rolling plane set" was a dismal failure back in WarBirds, for a variety of reasons, including, but not limited to:

1.) the ever-rising chorus of weeping and wailing to the effect that folks simply did not like being denied their favorite ride
2.) nit-picking by history grognards decrying the lack of all the correct sub-variants (guilty as charged)
3.) complaints about the details of how the rolling plane set was written

etcetera, etcetera, etcetera...

It was *ugly*.

Crazy talk.

I sure wish the RPS guys would all band together and make a custom arena to their liking, all fly in it together, and be happy with their RPS.  Why does this not happen?  I doubt the numbers cap on a custom arena would be a factor for them.

This is a dumb idea. I would quit if I couldn't log on and up an M18 whenever I wanted.

It was a one time thing for a few hours, everybody knew that LW was just kaputt. Notice how quick everybody was back in LW after that arena came back up again. If it were all about "I play LW only because everybody is there", it would have happened that fast ;)
The reception would quite different if people (who do play only for a few hours each month for the most part) had to face EW or MW planesets only each time they are logging in.

It would be an interesting experiment.
It wouldn't bother me to try it since I only fly P38s. So for me to start with the G then move to J and end with L would be OK.
But then I know that I'm in a very tiny minority that only flies one plane.
I could see where this would cause people to leave AH.    :bolt:
And that would be very bad end result for all of us.    :cry
So I would vote no on this one.    :old:
