Big difference was Katrina's impact was multiplied by the failure of levies that were not maintained properly. The money alocated for their upkeep was diverted to political pockets. The local government failed to evacuate people ahead of the storm. The Governor of Louisiana failed to allow The Feds in for several days. It is against the Law for them to just show up, the Governor must ask for assistance.

The East Coast area Sandy hit has the highest concentration of People per Square Mile in the US.

The Atlantic Ocean could not be stopped in this 100 year storm. I live in NJ and we helped out New Orleans are you doing the same for us?

Actually people have tried and were turned away because of the union mentality up there.
They call it "common sense", then why is it so uncommon?

Howdy Slate, hows things going over there?

I was up in the Atlantic Highlands yesterday helping a friend with his boat. We got it on the trailer and hauled it home. Thank god it was leaning against the PILE of boats there. Helped another friend in Sayerville that lives in the back of the bay salvage some things. What im seeing is just amazing. Takes alot to shock me. Being a Prop Adjuster for 20yrs that has traveled all over the country after mother nature has lost her mind, (tornados, hurricanes etc etc) I like to think ive seen it all....but man its just brutal over there.  Hope you and yours are ok, Got power yet?

Just a heads up, id take what the power companys say regarding when power is coming back with a grain of salt......Friend was told that it would be the 7th, then the 14th and wound up getting it back 11pm last night.  Those out of state linemen are tops! :aok

Actually people have tried and were turned away because of the union mentality up there.

That is a rumor and not true. The rumor was Electric utilities were turned away from Alabama because they were not Union and it was proved to be FALSE. It's sad people grab onto these rumors and propagate them on hearsay.

My family is ok, My Home is intact so I consider myself lucky. No power still after 8 days but I have an RV with a good Generator that I power my home for several hours during the day. I won't run it at night for fear of a fire and to save fuel.
Many here don't have any power or generator and it's geing cold at night. I gave power to my neighbor until he was able to find a generator.
Power Trucks are around from many states and I appreciate what they are trying to do in difficult circumstances. My wife is wonderful helping People. She bought hundreds of dollars of food for our local firehouse as they have been working nonstop. Her Brother is also on the Search and Rescue team. She then contacted the Radio Station and donations have been pouring in.
I lost two good friends one Saturday and one Sunday just before the storm. One friend 49 years old with 2 kids and seemed in good health to a sudden heart attack. My other Friend was sick with Cancer so not a total suprise there. Been crazy and will remember these days for a long time.

It was all over the news and radios shows.  What is sad is not that I listen to the news but that the news can say anything they want and not be held accountable.  Its not anyone's fault but the news networks for spewing crap and not announcing a retraction or at least offering an admission of getting the facts wrong.

What also amazes me is that yall on the east coast are making such a huge deal of what us on the gulf coast expirience every few hurricane seasons. Well atleast the news is... C'mon already! I'm trying to watch the news n all I'm getting is these poor new yorkers can't get in their home cuz they need to be inspected first! Omfg that's terrible! I didn't even have a house to go home to after katrina n even still the sympathy I got for it made me sick! Suck it up ladies... *Bleep* happens..

And just like you. entire towns were effectively wiped out. just like you, a lot of people are suddenly homeless. Still, remember the area hit is the most densely populated part of the country thus probably more people have been effected.
Also, down south at least its warm. I'm fortunate inasmuch as I have a small generator. But I turn that off at night when I go to bed as I don't want to leave it unattended. I woke up to a 45 degree house this morning with outside temp of 27 degrees. There are a lot on my block without even a generator.

You don't happen to have a sister in Monmouth Junction that you were doing work for yesterday do you?
If so. We met.
If not I was talking to someone else who was down there doing the same thing and pretty Mich said as you did. The complete devastation  is enormous. Even worse then it looks on tv. Houses gone, boats stacked up almost like firewood in areas. He said the shots shown on tv make it look mild in comparison to how bad it really is in the shore areas.
