Another idea for perk points
« on: November 06, 2012, 06:50:51 PM »
From accounts I've read, it was not just the aircraft, nor was it the pilot.  The maintenace crews played a big part in the performance of vehicles.

How difficult would it be to institute the use of perks for getting an aircraft with a freshly rebuilt engine so that performance was bumped a notch?
Perhaps your crew chief go a hold of some higher octane fuel?

Likewise it might be interesting to fly a plane with poor maintenance.

This would help mix things up in the arenas where the evaluations of veterans are very well calibrated and provide another use for perk points aside from getting ubber vehicles.

That would not be a good idea.  The concept itself makes sense, but it wouldnt work well in a game.  If I attack an enemy aircraft I dont want to have to wonder if its an uber roided up plane, or a beat down one.
Just imagine the new set of excuses people would now have for losing a fight, or the complaints about cheating because so and so's plane "shouldn't have been able to do that"

I see it as adding a layer of fog into the war.  Sure people would be upset from time to time, but this would be weighed against the chance to actually do more with perks.  Besides, there are a lot of players that would jump at the chance to have new excuses as to why they suck.

I was thinking of a system wherein after a certain number of sorties the planes a player receive are of lower quality unless they pay for maintenance and upkeep but this would be even more unpopular.  Of course, I'm partial to the idea that players recieve negative perks if they fail to bring their planes back to the base.

Anyhow, I'd like to see more done with perks and as much as ground crews were praised in RL, they get nadda in game.

Was thinking more along the lines of gun#4 on your Mustang had lost its rifling, or a lack of maintenance
increasing the rate of jams.  Oh wait, we don't model jams.  Bummer.

I do see your point and the last thing I'd want is the game devolving from semi-accurate simulation to
a point-n-shoot arcade game.

I floated a similar idea a long time ago as an incentive for people to land their aircraft instead of bailing.

First ride - stock plane.  The engine boost and guns rpm are the basic stock range.  After you land a certain number of kills in it, the "mechanics" begin to spend more time on it and your plane gets to the high-end range of the performance.   Example - the MG 151 20mm cannon in a 109 has a ROF of 700 - 750 rpm.  Start out with the "stock" 700rpm, and if you land 5 kills in it have it boosted to 750rpm as the gun has been "tuned".  This only lasts until you LOSE that plane.  Stock 109K engine boost starts at the default of 1.80, but if you can bring home 5 kills maybe then you might get the C3 fuel and the 1.98 ata boost.

There ARE a lot of differences between the factory stock delivery and the real world field performance.  Mechanics remove unneeded things to save weight, add newer parts to older aircraft, etc.  One kit I read about was the addition of dive flaps to the P38-J model -- the factory sent over the kits for installation in the field.

It would benefit veterans while making the learning curve even harder than it is for new players.  It will also increase perk farming in the EW and MW arenas so players can spend them getting 'power ups' to increase their planes performance.
