Looking to buy a tablet PC need help .
« on: November 12, 2012, 09:09:35 PM »
I like to get one where I can hook up or pick up my modem or be able to go down to the coffee shop and get on there hot spot . Not real sure whats what . A WiFi would be were I would have to pay for a service like a data plane right ? I don't want that so what should I look for in a tablet that will hook up to my home modem ? Thanks for any help , this is all new to me .

It depends on what you want to use it for.

If all you want to do is browse the internet or check email, get a used ipad without the cellphone inside.  "wifi" will hook up to wireless network hotspots and you can get a fairly inexpensive "wireless broadband router" to hook up to your modem at home so you can use the wireless "wifi" at home for any tablet, laptop, etc. that has a wireless "wifi" network adaptor.

Pretty much any ipad version will work.  So will pretty much any android tablet, but in my experience the ipads are easier to use and the quality is very high.

If you need a general purpose computer like a laptop that you can also use as a tablet, you want a "convertible" laptop/tablet.  Lenovo has some, not sure what other manufacturers have something like that.  A convertible laptop will cost a lot more than most tablets.  If I was on a very slim budget and needed a tablet though, I'd get a used or refurbished ipad with just the wifi.
Everyone I know, goes away, in the end.

I want a 10 inch 4.0 android that will pick up my modem at the house or pick up my friends modem when I go over to his house Like I do with my laptop  that I can just cruse the web and check email , FB and stuff like that . I don't want where I would have to pay for a data plan and where I live It would not get a signal anyway .

check out the samsung galaxy tablets, they are Android and you will just want to get  a non 3g/4g model, they all have wifi which is what you need for connecting to wireless networks

3g/4g is where you can get a dataplan to go online from anywhere, but as you don't need that you can go for the wifi only versions which are quite a bit cheaper

That would be fine, but it sounds like you don't need/want the 3g capability, so you could probably save money by getting the wifi only version

I have the 7" samsung tablet, very happy with it. Only reason I didnt get a 10" is simply I couldnt justify the cost difference just for an extra 3" of screen.

For the network, depends on what your router is capable of. Most newer routers have G/N access. Depending on the size of your house, idlook for one with high range.

I have the Sony Tablet S which was the first they came out with.  While Sony has revamped the new one and labeled it Xperia, it is still quite impressive from what Sony came out with. It is very media friendly with the ability to control every service of entertainment in a house such as TVs, DVD players, Blu-ray players, etc so dont need multiple remotes.  I also very much like Sony's reader on the tablet.  Much easier to use than any E-reader app I have ever seen.  Th ergonomics on it are interesting as its curved to fit your hand as if you were holding a magazine.  They are jacked up in price like other tablets on the market either.

I have an iPad2 with cellular.  I don't even take a laptop when I travel now, I just use the iPad.

Use http://www.tabletnation.com

Click Compare All Tablets and base what you need by the functions it has.

FWIW, my requirements were to be able to use my data plan via bluetooth with my Android phone. So I picked up an Asus Transformer Prime. When not in wifi range (like traveling down the road) I connect via my data plan to the tablet. (Neither need rooting, just a couple of apps and your up and running)
