Gut wrenching sortie!
« on: March 05, 2001, 09:29:00 AM »
You ever have one of those sorties where your hands are shaking at the end of it?  It takes you 1/2 hour to get back down to earth?

Mine was yesterday, had a few min. for a quick sortie, noticed a BIG DAR BAR heading for Knitland Factory center, so did the natural thing, jumped in a 109G10, with gondola's and headed for 30k..once arriving there, I could see the enemy dots from 8 miles away,...alot higher than I !  Up I went to 35k...low and behold, the buffs were STILL higher than I !  Suddenly, 2000 feet below me at 33k, two P47's went wizzing by hot on the tail of a countryman intent on doing what I had set out to do...down I went.

The P47's broke and the 3 of us started to position, swirl, etc.  after about 5 min. of each of us posturing for a kill, the P47's hit the deck and ran for it.  Trying to prevent compression by 'flying by trim' (THANK GOD for HOTAS), I eventually closed the gap.  They had no choice, turn and engage me or die.  Their wingman tactics were nothing short of excellent!~ For 15 min. we dove, snap shots, climbed, turned, weaved..I finally got lucky and managed a snap shot and started one of the P47's smoking..but he wasn't thru, back at it again we went, until finally I managed to finish off the smoker, and eventually his wingman.  It was one of the most exciting dogfights I've ever had, almost like a 'hole in one' golf shot, you keep playing the game to get one of these exciting moments!  WHew, just typing this is like reliving the fight!

Yep, some missions are better than others...

Few weeks ago I took up Fw 190A-8 with 4 20 mm cannons and 500 kg bomb with intent of killing enemy ground vehicles attacking our V base. I flew to target just above the waves, scanning for ground targets. I soon spotted yellow and green vehicles ahead of me. Flying towards them I hoped the one would not be Ostwind... They turned out to be M3 and Panzer! I fired all guns to M3 which died almost instantly. I pulled up my Wulf to vertical, selected bobm and dived back to panzer which died as bomb hit him almost directly. I noticed few dots coming towards me outside icon range. I started to climb away from them, constantly checking my six. Soon F6F icon appeared and I watched as the range got smaller. I leveled and turned towards him and noticed two F4U's entering the area little below me...

I can't recall details of the fight but after a fierce dogfight I managed to shoot down all three enemies and I landed the mission with last drops of fuel.

Landed five kill mission with heavy Fw 190A-8. It was nice!

Last night I logged on at about 10:00PM PST for one last flight before going to bed.  Looking at the situation I saw that A21 was under heavy attack with no Rooks defending it.  I tried to take off of A20, but all fighter hangers were down.  I jumped to A26 and took off in a Spitfire MkVb with 75% fuel and started heading for A21.

By the time I reached 5000ft A21 had fallen and the Bishop horde was off my radar.  I guessed that they were going to try to take A20 next and so altered my course and continued to climb.  Sure enough, the red horde started reappearing in the 7, 10 sector heading for A20.  As the first dots began to show up, it became apparent that I was going to reach A20 at about the same time as they were.

It being late and me feeling full of bravado because of my successes earlier in the day, I typed into the open channel "I will not let you take 20 unopposed!"

Upon reaching the enemy I found that there was an N1K2 above me and an F4U-1C well below.  I chose to dive on the F4U and allow the N1K to try its luck on me if it wanted.  The F4U saw me coming and after a brief series of maneuvers headed for the smoke of A20.  I gave chase and initially gained on him due to my altitude advantage, but as that was exausted the slow speed of my SpitV began to tell and he started to pull away.  By the time we passed through the smoke I had gone to a lower altitude than his 300ft to try to fool him into thinking I'd given up, but he'd extended to about 1.1.  At this time I noticed that I had picked up a bandit on my 6 and he was gaining.  At 1.3 he pulled up sharply and I cut the corner on him, blowing his vertical stabilizer off.

I didn't see the bandit on my 6 so I dove for the smoke and did a sharp pull to the left over the field and engaged the N1K.  Now there was a P-38 and another F4U-1C with me as well as the N1K.  The field guns now began to respawn and the F4U-1C was quickly shot down, with me getting credit for it although I really had nothing to do with it.  After doing two turns with the N1K I was able to put a 20mm round into his engine after barely getting him in my sights, he must have been no more than 10 yards from me in a frontal aspect when I shot him.  The field guns finished him off with me getting the credit and points for him.

I then began to engage the P-38L with was turning with me, but after half a turn and one pass by the P-38 in which he couldn't get a firing solution, I saw a C-47 slipping over a hill to hide.  Judging that as the best target to inconvenience them with, I went after it.  The P-38 came around and gave chase.  As I dove over the rim of the coastal hill that the C-47 had disappeared over I saw that it had go left and was now at 1.0.  I was gaining on the C-47 fast, but the P-38 was gaining on me and began firing at long range to try to dissuade me from my target.  He was too far away for me to give him much chance of stopping me in time though.  I closed and, with a sustained burst from 500 yards into 400 yards, blew the tail off of the C-47.

I then pulled hard left to avoid the P-38.  He turned with me and obtained a few more .50 cal hits on me.  As I turned with the intention of pulling in on the P-38's tail a SpitIX joined him, but with a better firing position.  In an attempt to shake the Spit, I tried going over the top and the Spit blew me apart.

I then typed into the open channel "I told you I wouldn't let you take 20 unopposed"

Then I had to log off to go to bed.

I feel that I gave a good account of myself and lived up to my first statement.

That experience, Ripsnort was brought to you in a combined op. by 249 (Bomber) Sqdrn. RAF commanded by Marcof and 56 (Fighter) sqdrn. RAF (Firebirds)led by Vladd. We had a whale of a time, I got 3 Kills (including making Wobbel auger) before my spit was punctured by Staga.

<S> to the gallant enemy. Resistance is (almost) useless.

That's an understatement when you can fly buffs above what they actually could fly with a full load during WW2 !

Oh! I might add, when you guys finished that 'sortie'..we proceeded to take no less than 7 fields in the next 2 hours.  THanks for inspiring what was turning out to be a boring afternoon!

Thanks for those missions yesterday Rip.
was an absolute blast nailing all those fields in succession it's amazing how fast you can take out an entire field when you're organized.

That was a good one Karnak.  I was the goon driver.  The funny thing was we had like 8 planes capping the base and 1 frekking spitfire there.  I called out and told them where I was approaching from, and someone still drug you toward me and gave away my position.  At that point, I figured I was as good as dead so I went in anyway.  Just as I was in range of the base, one of the acks came up...so I whipped it around and headed back out to loiter over the water to the east.  This was the point at which you began following me....I knew I was in trouble.  I couldnt believe that someone hadnt killed yer sorry spitfire driving prettythang yet.    I mean its not like we didnt have you outnumbered like 8 to 1.  I thought I was gonna get away from you though...I think you almost overshot me, no?

Anyway, good defense.  <S>!

sling322,
On my FE I blew significant chunks of your tail off and you started to tumble out of control before I flew by you, at least it looked like you were out of control.

If I'd come around a few seconds later you'd have been over the lip and I'd never have known you were there.  I hadn't seen you until the moment I started chasing you.

Thanks for giving me your account of the encounter. <S>!

That flight capped a day in which I went 3 to 1 in the SpitV (15 to 5).  For me that is VERY good.  I normally don't do nearly that well, usually about 1 to 1.

The best sortie I can remember was bug322 and me in P-38's (=Twin Engined Devils=)escorting Wolve and Jolly's (33rd Strike Group) Lancasters from SW island (in previous tour map) to N island HQ.

Lancs got to 20k by flying to the middle of the map, at which point we, the escorts linked up. Otw to N island we climbed to 25k and leveled, bug and I (and a P-51 that joined us..dont remember his name) matched speed with lancs to save fuel and stay close.

a bit above half of the map we met the first 109 which had climbed above us and tried to hit from our 6. 109 being a pig at alt couldnt manouver and promptly went down by my guns. P-51 buddy discoed during this fight. As we entered N island we started meeting 109's all the time, bug and I stayed real close to the buffs, making 109's dive and not following them down... lancs shot down 1 109, bug and I bagged 3 more 109's during this period. High alt combat is amazing. Lancs dropped their bombs and turned to their return base (we had 1 base in middle island). Otw home bug and I shot down 3 more 109's, lancs got a 2nd 109.

Halfway to middle island a lanc discoed.

Finally, I ran out of gas halfway to middle island, bug and lanc continued towards middle island base. Thanking the Gods of the Lightning, I glided 2 and half sectors from 24k.. and landed 6 miles from middle island base on the beach.

It was the most awesome mission ive flown to date, the group got to target and out safely and we all returned home (bug and lanc landed in rwy, I ditched) while inflicting 9 casualties to LW interceptors AND taking out enemy HQ.

Every mission I have flown with the 13th, since my return to AH, has been an exciting one. For security reasons, though, I shall refrain from revealing details.

Shakey hands? Wha...?

No, Creamo, don't flatter yourself, we expect that from guys with no skill.    BTW, that was a Japanese Jabo, we had a British Jabo, a Mix, and a couple others that afternoon...and we never just bring 2 goons/M3's...we bring more, so your 'goon hunting, then augering to avoid giving up a kill' is futile!
