Last night I logged on at about 10:00PM PST for one last flight before going to bed. Looking at the situation I saw that A21 was under heavy attack with no Rooks defending it. I tried to take off of A20, but all fighter hangers were down. I jumped to A26 and took off in a Spitfire MkVb with 75% fuel and started heading for A21.
By the time I reached 5000ft A21 had fallen and the Bishop horde was off my radar. I guessed that they were going to try to take A20 next and so altered my course and continued to climb. Sure enough, the red horde started reappearing in the 7, 10 sector heading for A20. As the first dots began to show up, it became apparent that I was going to reach A20 at about the same time as they were.
It being late and me feeling full of bravado because of my successes earlier in the day, I typed into the open channel "I will not let you take 20 unopposed!"
Upon reaching the enemy I found that there was an N1K2 above me and an F4U-1C well below. I chose to dive on the F4U and allow the N1K to try its luck on me if it wanted. The F4U saw me coming and after a brief series of maneuvers headed for the smoke of A20. I gave chase and initially gained on him due to my altitude advantage, but as that was exausted the slow speed of my SpitV began to tell and he started to pull away. By the time we passed through the smoke I had gone to a lower altitude than his 300ft to try to fool him into thinking I'd given up, but he'd extended to about 1.1. At this time I noticed that I had picked up a bandit on my 6 and he was gaining. At 1.3 he pulled up sharply and I cut the corner on him, blowing his vertical stabilizer off.
I didn't see the bandit on my 6 so I dove for the smoke and did a sharp pull to the left over the field and engaged the N1K. Now there was a P-38 and another F4U-1C with me as well as the N1K. The field guns now began to respawn and the F4U-1C was quickly shot down, with me getting credit for it although I really had nothing to do with it. After doing two turns with the N1K I was able to put a 20mm round into his engine after barely getting him in my sights, he must have been no more than 10 yards from me in a frontal aspect when I shot him. The field guns finished him off with me getting the credit and points for him.
I then began to engage the P-38L with was turning with me, but after half a turn and one pass by the P-38 in which he couldn't get a firing solution, I saw a C-47 slipping over a hill to hide. Judging that as the best target to inconvenience them with, I went after it. The P-38 came around and gave chase. As I dove over the rim of the coastal hill that the C-47 had disappeared over I saw that it had go left and was now at 1.0. I was gaining on the C-47 fast, but the P-38 was gaining on me and began firing at long range to try to dissuade me from my target. He was too far away for me to give him much chance of stopping me in time though. I closed and, with a sustained burst from 500 yards into 400 yards, blew the tail off of the C-47.
I then pulled hard left to avoid the P-38. He turned with me and obtained a few more .50 cal hits on me. As I turned with the intention of pulling in on the P-38's tail a SpitIX joined him, but with a better firing position. In an attempt to shake the Spit, I tried going over the top and the Spit blew me apart.
I then typed into the open channel "I told you I wouldn't let you take 20 unopposed"
Then I had to log off to go to bed.
I feel that I gave a good account of myself and lived up to my first statement.
