No licence needed!
« on: November 20, 2012, 09:05:18 PM »
Is that really true? Is this thing legal to fly with no licence? Not that I have the money or the ability to fly it, just curious.

If it's a pt103 ultralight you don't need anything to fly it.

This part prescribes rules governing the operation of ultralight vehicles
  in the United States. For the purposes of this part, an ultralight vehicle
  is a vehicle that:
    (a) Is used or intended to be used for manned operation in the air by a
        single occupant;
    (b) Is used or intended to be used for recreation or sport purposes only;
    (c) Does not have any U.S. or foreign airworthiness certificate; and
    (d) If unpowered, weighs less than 155 pounds; or
    (e) If powered:
    (1) Weighs less than 254 pounds empty weight, excluding floats and safety
        devices which are intended for deployment in a potentially catastrophic
        situation;
    (2) Has a fuel capacity not exceeding 5 U.S. gallons;
    (3) Is not capable of more than 55 knots calibrated airspeed at full
        power in level flight; and
    (4) Has a power-off stall speed which does not exceed 24 knots calibrated
        airspeed.

I bet it would be fun, but the look of those propellers is scary. 2 little bolts holding them on - one of my biggest (and irrational) fears in aviation is a propeller blade (or propeller) coming off and hitting me. Those are right level with your boys - not something I would want to have happen.

More like weed whacker engines. 2 stroke rotax - mix oil and gas. Not so reliable. My neighbor flew ultralights for 5 years, he gave up after his 3rd engine failure (and crash)

Heh that's why I would stay away from them if/when I ever fly. I'd love to have a pilots licence someday, I just don't have the time or money for it, let alone actually buying and maintaining plane.

I'd rather it look more like an aircraft than a couple lawn chairs damaged by a wind storm.

I've flown a couple legal ultralights. I wouldn't touch that one.

I agree, I wouldn't touch this one even if I had the skill necessary to fly. I was just curious as to whether it really was legal to fly it with out a licence.

Doesn't look much rougher than one of the jump planes I flew....or probably some of your night cargo stuff.  Besides, if you KNOW the engine won't quit wheres the fun?!  :D

I'd rather do gliders imho, for a number of reasons, one being that you don't have to worry about if you cleared the lawn clippings from your carborator during preflight.

Two tippmann A5 .68 e-triggers mounted to the cowling...now THAT would be win!   :airplane:
