French F-5 P38 skin, what version would it be for?
« on: November 22, 2012, 07:48:09 PM »
Howdy,

Was perusing some p38 pictures and saw a light blue model of a p38 with French markings. The scoops under the props are later than the 38G variant but no idea if it was in use during the war and therefore could someday be used for the 38J or L that we have

It's the French F-5

Just looked interesting so I figured I'd share :salute

That is a French F5B, my guess is he was attempting to re-create Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's F5B 42-68223 but used the wrong tail numbers.

Looking up 42-68213, it appears to have been lost in the Netherlands in Sept 1944. Worse yet, that aircraft was flown by an American pilot who died in the line of duty (Ernest E Johnston) and this modeler decided to paint French roundels on it anyway.

The last scenario, I lead a group of Recce F5s and I learned a lot and had a blast. Here is a picture of the skin we used (no, this skin isn't available in the Main Arena).

Here is an example of some of the pictures taken during the event, as they would of appeared historically.

Pilots were given orders to photograph battle damage after bomb raids. They did this with screenshots instead of cameras. They weren't allowed to use guns because F5s had no armament.

So, it wasn't really a mod, per se. It was just pilots following orders properly to create better immersion.  :aok

We had a number of observant Axis pilots in that scenario also very interested in... umm... properly creating better immersion for the senario's Recce F5s over the Rhineland.  :aok

It was hands down the most difficult position I've ever been in, in a scenario environment. Our F5s had neither the benefit of speed (all but the 410s were faster than we are), nor did we have the ability to hide in many miles of empty sky.  A bunch of times I was parked behind Luftwaffe pilots 400 yards out, doing nothing but swearing to myself due to the lack of guns.

I was a bit disappointed to be ridiculed by some of the Luftwaffe for performing that unique role, but I would gladly perform the same role again if asked.
