Wow...that completely destroyed the engine when it let go.

Really scary thinking what would happen with those parts flying through the cabin.

Safety Equipment is just that.
As much as he put into that car (and others like him) ...
..it just boggles me when they choose not to do even the most obvious bits.
Scatter Shield is called that for a reason. Even a brand new clutch can blow apart like a bomb.
Driveshaft loop, engine tie down cable, subframe connectors, roll cage
.. all there to keep yer butt alive when somethin tries to bite.

Especially on the older cars .. even the wheel studs should be replaced with 'the good stuff'
if yer gonna slam some serious torque to 'em.

In the late 60s' a group of us would run during grudge night at the Quaker City Dragway in Salem Ohio.

Good friend of mine John was running....64 Ford with a 428 Cobra in it.....clutch shattered, came up through

floorboards, took two toes from his right foot, debris slammed into the steering colum even.

From then on we installed scatter shields....of course designed by us back yard mechanics.

Anyone notice the driver was burning the clutch while the tires stood still when it went?

Clutches and flywheels like to fall apart when they are heated white hot.

think of the clutch in your car as a time bomb. the flywheel weighs around 12 pounds or more, then the pressure plate/disc assembly another 5 to 8 pounds. then spin those puppies up to 5,0oo rpm. you've got a TON of stored energy there. that's why we run scatter shields, and blow proof bellhousings when we race manual transmission cars.

finally got home and was able to see the video. \

dude is LUCKY he built 600+ horsepower, and didn't spend the extra few bucks for a scattershield/blowproof bell? if that thing had let loose at the top of a gear....or worse, at the top end of his runs on the track, he'd not have been posting this video....

guys......if you're even racing a stock manual transmission equipped car.........spend the money on the safety equipment. please. it only takes once.

CAP,

I have an 07 Acura TL type S manual since new - I don't do anything to it, but this video scares the F out of me. Does my car have anything built into it to prevent this or is a SS something that needs to be added on?

not sure but isnt that front wheel drive? so the engine would sit sideways or am I mistaken?  I would think that it shouldnt need it :headscratch:

to the best of my knowledge, they don't come with anything protective from the factory. in fact, i'm not sure what can be done with a front wheel drive transaxle to protect from something like this. the problem with fwd transaxles, is that the bellhousing is part of the trans.

the engine/trans are mounted sideways, but that doesn't mean that the clutch still can't explode.

Aye Cap .. was in the stagin lanes during time trials at LACR one fine day..
..guy stages his big block 55 chebby .. 12" slicks, saw the deep pan, announcer said it was a 454 ..
...did a nice wheelstand comin off the line ..he hit second, the car turned sharp right into the guardraill and flipped over.

Apparantly he had his seat harness poorly mounted ..he came loose and broke his neck, dead on the scene.
Car did the sharp right because he sheared an axle.
