opinions about a truck repair

my friends gmc 3/4 ton had frame issues, so we welded it all up braced it yadda yadda yadda.  So he is now ordering the spring hangers, they dont come with the bolts to bolt it up.  Question being grade 5 or 8?  I think when I replaced the hanger on my 1/2 ton it was just grade 5 painted black, it came with the bolts.  but I dont remember exactly what the markings on the bolts were.

I would use 8 on a 3/4ton.

On something that important why not spend the extra couple dollars if even that much, and go ahead and buy the 8's.  Heck, I put all grade 8 bolts back in my atv when I take something apart.

yeah thats kind of what he was thinking also, just unsure as he has a bolt bin but all grade 5

Grade 8 fasteners are not replacements for Grade 5 fasteners.   Each has their place on any vehicle.   It comes down to Shear Capability and Tensile Strength.

when it comes from factory they are riveted in, he has 7/16" bolts grade 5 which is the size of the rivet, but neither of us can locate grade 8 bolts anywhere around here in 7/16".  Can find half inch and 3/8 but nont 7/16, which is why I figured I would ask here if he would be better off drilling the holes to 1/2 and using grade 8 or if grade 5 would work, would save ALOT of drilling.  Even the new hangers comes with 7/16 holes

they dont sell the bolts for the 2500 they only sell the bolts for the 1500 is what he was told on the phone at lmc truck

 i never use anything short of grade 8 in anything critical. if i buy a kit that comes with something less than grade 8, i replace what came with the kit with them.

he is only using the ruck for a yard truck, he has another vehicle that is his daily driver

stretched the frame on my kw t600 26 inches. no problems with the welds after 743018 miles. and I run considerably higher weights than 3/4 ton

The Chevy C/K has a weak spot on the frame and it will crack.   It cracks right near and sometimes behind the Steering Box.    If not "braced & welded", the Box will rip off of the frame and then you have no steering.    Also the CJ's  are notorious for the frame cracking on the Passenger side.    Water gets into the holes drilled by the manufacturer, then over time the frame starts to crack.   

Patching a frame is completely different and would agree with you.

Grade 8 fasteners are not replacements for Grade 5 fasteners.   Each has their place on any vehicle.   It comes down to Shear Capability and Tensile Strength. 

Grade 8 fasteners used in place of 5 on spring hangar brackets is not going to cause an issue.  Especially if you consider that the stronger fastener (Grade 8) is not likely to fail (or through failure to shear or break) and allow damage that would be considered recoverable owing to the issue.  IE, if they do break, the damage is likely so catastrophic the vehicle is gone anyways or if they do not shear, the resulting damage to the frame will be considered moot owing to the other damage.
