Airplane mode disconnects me randomly
« on: December 06, 2012, 08:17:25 PM »
I have windows 8, on my laptop, when I fly AH I constantly get disconnected only to find airplane mode switched on while I was flying and disconnected my wi-fi...  this doesnt happen when I'm "surfing" the net, only when I play AH???  help.

Surfing the net does not require data to have no errors, thus it retries when it gets an error. The game cannot do that, so it disconnects when it gets an error in the data stream.

I do not know what you are talking about when you make reference to "airplane mode" being switched on.

If youi are playing thje game over a wireless connection, you can expect to lose connection far more often than with a wired connection.  It simply is the nature of the technology.

when I get disconnected, its because for some reason the airplane mode slider slides to on and that completely shuts down my wi-fi

it's found in network connections in windows 8.... its a bugger... I dont plan on taking my laptop on an airplane for a long time, but when I do this feature might come in handy, until then it is a pain in the patooty! :bhead

You don't have a smartphone or tablet Skuzzy?  (iPhone or Android based?... and now it's looking like win8 too)

Airplane mode has been a very standard and common feature now for all mobile platforms - what windows8 is specificly customed to.  I use it frequently on my phone, but most (grounded) people probabley never do need to or want to, primarily what it's for is it prevents your device from killing the battery since otherwise it'll constantly be scanning for and trying to establish network/cell connection - so it kills all your networking until its renabled.

Skyrock, unless your new laptop has a touchscreen - windows 7 is far better for you, especialy if you're primarily utilising your laptop for gaming.  This sounds like a sleep/power saver feature, win8 just isn't recognising you actively using the network/internet/computer while running AH...  or maybe whenever you go afk for 5+ min (or simpley don't touch your computer while autopilot is on), and you really are technicaly afk, it kicks on (very likely I suspect, laptops have agressive default power saving settings).

But yeah, sorry, otherwise I have no idea how win8 works.  Try browsing windows support forums to see if you can disable it from automaticly kicking on - if you were using a more familiar windows version then I'd guess it's in your power management settings.  Good luck!

Had one of those bricks many years ago.  Smartphones or tablets do not fill any needs I have.  It is a waste of money for me.

When I used to do technical work, being able to ssh from my phone was awesome.   This way, when I was on-call I didn't have to get in front of a computer to take care of most admin tasks.

Like I said, for me it is an expense I cannot justify.  There is simply no point in me throwing away the money.

Took me a while to step up to the plate, again.  I went without a smart phone (or any cell phone) for ~4-5 years until over a year ago, but this was mostly for financial reasons and scrapeing cans after the divorce.  When I'm bored and stuck somewhere for a few minutes it's great to be able to surf the web or post on FB or this forum.  Mostly I'm glad I can be reached anywhere and anytime again, keep a "master" address book and calendar/schedule that's constantly edited but accessible on my phone or computer, and also Im able to stay ontop of my email accounts (quickly respond and read important things, sort the rest, etc.).

A luxury I can live without, but ultimatley function (communicate/organise) better with.

When I am off work, I only get on the Internet to get software updates for my software, check this bulletin board, and that is it.  My primary use for a computer, at home, is for video editing.

I check my personal email twice a day.

I have no need for a calendar or schedule.  I have all my addresses and phone contacts on my flip phone.  I also have the cell company disable SMS.

Anyone that needs to reach me has my cell phone number.

I cannot think of how a smart phone or any other mobile device would make things better for me.

:lol  You remind me of my father, probabley had too many random text messages (all three of them, likely from the cell company itself), so you've had your carrier disable them.  Except you sound like you have actualy programmed some contacts into it.

In most cases, the best uses for it you won't realise until you already have it.  Like my camera on my phone - I knew it would be invaluable at air shows for saving eye-candy, but I actually equaly value it (now) at them for taking snapshots of schedules and contacts as they litteraly fly past infront of me all day at the briefs and on the line.  Then there's the value I place on my device at these events with just being on the road and in a motel/hotel for the greater part of a week.  Pays for itself each trip with me, but without it I would probabley still be alive and getting by with a pencil and piece of paper/notepad.
