Mobile friendly bbs
« on: December 11, 2012, 05:13:20 PM »
So I haven't been able to play in a while,  though I think about it frequently and it's still close to my heart.  I haven't got Internet at home and likely won't for another 6 months,  so it'll be a while before I can fly again.

Now, I'd really like to be able to follow the forums on my phone,  which is my only net connection, but the forum is really difficult on a phone.

I really wish that you guys could get the forum going for the Tapatalk app,  or vbulletin for phones at the very least.  I miss the forums and a lot of the people on here.  I just really wish there was a good way to have phone access that works ok.

That is all.

It works flawlessly on my smartphone's web browser (HTC android), I just type in http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/ or find the link off their front page.  It even keeps me logged in forever (as I wish).

I think there's a setup in the options menu on the boards that changes the look to a "mobile" setting.

Hiya Ink!

Gentlemen,

on other forums I'm on,  and use on my phone flawlessly easily,  they either are accessible through Tapatalk,  which is fantastic,  or the vbulletin forum option,  which is quite good as well.  I can access it through my phone browser, but it's difficult to see pictures completely and type replies and the like.  It's clunky and difficult and honestly off putting.  It's just difficult to follow and participate this way.  And I'd like to participate again until I get back airborne.

Good to see you're still kickin around Madda! :aok

+1 for this. This BBS gives me a hard time when replying so I generally just don't until I'm in front of a PC. Reading is fine but typing a reply just doesn't work well. This is the only BBS that gives me problems like this too.

Moto Droid Razr using either the native browser or Firefox gives same results.

That's it exactly!  Navigation could be better,  but not the main issue.  With those two programs I mentioned though, it's all gravy!

Hi drano,  good to see ya man.

my iPhone displays the WAP version of the AH forums (yes there is one), although it didnt do it automatically and I just cant remember how I forced it :headscratch:

edit: ok, navigate to "Show unread posts since last visit." and add ";wap2" to the end of the URL. doesnt work adding it to individual posts afaik, but once you're on a WAP page, all the links are to the WAP versions too :aok

What doesn't work well for you?
I regularly access AH's forums from my android phone and I do not see any problems.  I'm using firefox and that works very well with the site filling the screen properly when I double tap to zoom. as for the UI certain aspects are smaller then I would like, but also perfectly respectable and expected considering I'm using a 4.3" screen.
What browser on your phone are you using?

I think it all depends on the phone.  on my droid x and rezound the forum looks just like it does on my puter.  except for pics for some reason they I can only see the left 1/2 on my droid x.  on my tablet it looks just like on my puter.

It's not a problem displaying any of the AH forums at all. My problem is in trying to type a post. For whatever reason I can't seem to form a paragraph and words that I select don't get entered right. Scrolling back to the offending word removes several other words. It's just odd. I post to other forums without issue. This is the only one giving me a problem. Not the end of the world as I don't do everything from my phone and with good reason. My eyes are getting old so that's more of a problem. No quick fix for that! (well other than the cheaters)

I use the native browser in my driod,  motorola electrify.

The main problem is entering text. The forum displays exactly like it does on my computer,  which is ok I guess,  but it doesn't size to my screen and still remain large enough to prevent my having to slide the screen around to read or look at pictures.

Check out some other forums using Tapatalk or ones that use vbulletin and you'll immediately see the difference.  Both those are incredibly functional on phones for forums.  Tapatalk is an app you have to buy. But vbulletin is native to the forum.  It's excellent as well.  Makes reading and looking at pics and replying extremely easy.

Tapatalk is the best though.  It even updates you on your phone when someone replies to a topic you're subscribed to, as well as grouping new posts since your last visit, and threads you've replied to.  It's just incredibly functional and intuitive.

This forum is just much clunkier and more difficult to navigate and use than either of those other options.

Not that this doesn't work,  it does,  I'm on it now,  it's just much more of a hassle than it needs to be.  Especially when the phone is your only option and you can't just go to the pc.

I'd love to be on the forums again more, but like this it's annoyingly difficult,  when it really doesn't need to be.

tapatalk app costs 3 bucks and when you click on a link still takes you to the browser.  not sure how many here would buy it as many dont have the problem.   I used the forums that use tapatalk and they're not easier to use than this forum.  I have been using them for about 3 years now from the droidx forums to xda developers and they sure as heck are not easier to use than the forums here.

Well that's the beauty of making it available to use with Tapatalk,  anybody who didn't want to,  wouldn't have to.

Personally, I have found it to be way, way easier and more functional to use than just viewing the forum in my phone's browser.

Vbulletin is as well,  but it's not as good as Tapatalk,  to me.
