Aces High Historic Gunsights

by: Bustr
12\17\12

Gunsights are constructed in 512x512 bitmap where 1Mil - 2Pixel.

Each gunsight (name.bmp) file has a corisponding (name.mil) file that must be copyed together into the Aces High Sights folder.

Example:

BrtiM2.bmp and BritM2.mil

C:\HitechCreations\Aces High\sights

If you do not include the two files together the gunsight will appear in your aircraft's reflector plate too tiny to be usable.
----------------------------

The gunsight zip file package has sub folders for each country. Inside is a readme file that explains which gunsight historicly went to which aircraft.
----------------------------
Bore Sight

I've included a gunsight tool called a bore sight. It's a Mil calibrated cross grid in 5Mil incraments so you can test your convergence, impact point, and dispersion with the offline target while flying auto leveled at Full Zoom.
----------------------------
Japanese Gunsights

Updated a JPType100 for the eventual Ki43 and Ki44.
----------------------------
German Gunsights

Added a modified Revi3 called Revi3G2 for the Ju87G2. Starting at 600 yards pretty much place the center mark on your tank.

Thank you, bustr.

I very much prefer using historical gunsights.

Let this go one more round on page one. Someone askes for an updated package every 6-12 months.

Does this pack include your lead computing sight as well?  Or is that sight POTW limited edition only?

Gen7, and no.

Anyone can bulid a Gen1 for wing guns by counting 34 pixels down from center then placing a 1 pixel line across the ring with about 75 pixels out on each side of the main ring. When you get behind someone between 200-400, zoom and slip the line inline with their wings and hold off lead the proper amount. It will look like the tracers arch up and into the con. The lead comp gunsight offline against drones will verify the efficacy of the line. It works best with wing guns and fighters with wing and hood.

Gen2 you spawn on the runway in your ride, goto zoom and hold down on the fire all button while taking a screen capture. Spitfires with 4-303 only fire the 20mm. Then following the angle of the lines of your tracers into the center of the gunsight you pull a 1pixel line for each side as an inverted V. Now when you slip your horizontal line inline with the turning drone, you have lines showing you your bullet path before pulling the trigger.

Gen3 make sure your main ring is 100Mil while you have a 50Mil and 15 to 20Mil circle inside of that. At this point get a copy of "Bag the Hun" and read the reason for the circles related to lead hold off. And you no longer need a dot for the center of the gunsight. The 15-20Mil ring is roughly your dispersion pattern between 200-600.

As for lead calculation, read "Bag the Hun". My Gen7 has some vector line guides to make my initial sight picture less a matter of guessing and repeatable but, I still have to kentucky windage my lead with the best. Just remember what the K14 did for you was low E turns to 30 degrees of your line of travel, shallow dives\climbs, and didn't require you to worry about range. High E turns like we pull in our furballs would disable or even break the gyroscope in the K14. Thats why it had a caged function which projected a fixed ring and pipper like our K14's do in the game.

Everything "Bag the Hun" attempts to teach you to calc on the fly. The K14 via gyroscopic precession mechanicly does it for you and made aces out of average pilots becasue your average fighter pilot could not accurately calc low E lead in WW2. The exact same problem many players have in this game.

An apology and a correction to this statement.

I'm making the assumption your gunsight bitmap mask is 512x512 when I ask you to count 34 pixels.

512x512 bitmap mask, 1Mil = 2pixel.

The choice of pixel coordinates is an average from testing. You may find the line (256, 285) below the (256, 256) gunsight center works better for you than (256, 290) when you construct yours. The line is as much for giving you a reference to speed up the time determining your intial impact point on firing. As it is to give you a visual reference line by which you can make a steady controled change of nose lead into your turn akin to using the turn\bank indicator to make controled turns.

The offline drones turn at the perfict low E bank to see how the line works 200-400. Inside of 200 you start running into bullet stream issues and under shoot. Past 400 you run into lead and elevation issues the farther past 10degrees your con travels off your line of travel.

The basic assumption of the K14 was that you could hold lead long enough by placing the movable 6-star sight on the con and hold it there for 1sec while the gyroscopic precession stabalised on your G. In the case of the line, the time you spend eyeballing hold off loosely corrisponds to the K14 hold wait time. With practice the addition of this simple line helps increase the numbers of rounds touching your target in low E, 30 degree and under sort of level turns. Pretty much the same parameters the K14 functioned while you replace the gyroscope's lead and elevation with your skill and the game gives you the range in the Icon.

If you give "Bag the Hun" a read, you will see how the addition of two more internal rings will help you with your lead. Or this article at SimHQ realy simplifys "Bag the Hun" down to what you need to know for our game.

Downloaded the pack this AM Bustr, nice job!

I'm wondering if you would describe how the P38 ramp sight is used. I do ok w/rockets but can't hit w/bombs...I started out in Warbirds in a 38 squadron and got pretty good w/bombs but have always struggled here. I practice every day and am usually VERY close but just cant hit the mark. Any help would be greatly appreciated! :salute
