need help from a mechanic
« on: December 18, 2012, 02:38:45 PM »
Iv got a 1993 gmc 2500 pick up. The locking mech on the stearing wheel is broke that releases the key. I can not find a  screw or bolt to take the stearing wheel apart. Were would it be located?

Thanks ben

There are 4 small nolts in the center of the column where the pivot ball is.
You will need to remove the steering wheel, and there is a lock plate that needs to be depressed to remove a clip so the plate will come off, then the turn signal switch has to come up far enough to get out of the way, then, using a small socket (possibly torx) you can tighten the bolts.
No parts involved, but a lot of labor :-)

do you mean that part that prevents you from turning the ignition key all the way to the "off" position?

if you're just looking to remove the steering wheel, you'll need a puller. there will be 2 or 4 screws or small bolts that are holding the airbag on if it has one. if it has an airbag, disconnect the battery BEFORE touching anything.  remove those screws, then unplug the airbag, and set it aside. you'll see a single nut....normally it'll take a 19mm or 18mm socket. remove this. this is where you'll need the puller to get the wheel off.
once it's off, you'll see the horn ring. you'll need a way to evenly press this down a bit, and a small pick to remove the retaining snap-ring. once this is removed, you'll see the turnsignal switch. 1 screw holds the turn signal stalk to the switch. remove it, then remove the 3 screws holding the turnsignal switch in. you should be able to pull it out about 3" without disconnecting the wire harness.
now you've got a tab with 2 thin copper contacts. it'll be held in with a torx headed screw. remove that, and you've now got the ignition lock cylinder retaining screw there. it also is a torx head. remove this, and you can simply slide the ignition lock cylinder out.

now.....do you need to get farther down into the pivot area of the tilt mechanism?

Just because it needs to be said, airbags can kill you.

There is a reserve charge in the airbags that can activate the bag for up to 15 minutes after the battery is disconnected.  Disconnect battery and wait at least 20 minutes before you begin to mess around with the wheel.

When you remove the bag, lay it Bracket Side Down.  If you do it bag side down, and it pops, it's going to go off like a rocket and it can do some incredible damage to a vehicle, structure or be quite deadly.

This isn't the time to experiment or rush, take those very seriously.
