HTC all I want for Xmas
« on: December 24, 2012, 01:40:46 AM »
Is to know dmg #s to kill ships/objects for direct hits(not for rides...better we don't know) ... Recently I had to pick between Stuka 1800kg gp or 1000kg ap to sink a cv and as it stands I think 1800kg does more. If my math is correct 150% x 1000= 1500kg worth if dmg then 1800kg is a bigger number. The 1800kg will make a Stuka slower(and any bigger load for that matter), but planes with AP bombs are slow anyway so it's a moot point if your 50mph slower. Am I right taking 1800kg for more dmg?

Yes, but the ratio isn't as favorable as 1500kg vs 1800kg.  Bigger bombs do less per pound than smaller bombs do.  Some of us have created tables with the damage values.  I'll post more from home when I have some data.

The 1800kg GP bomb does 3,403 lbs of damage. The 1000kg AP does 2,835lbs, at greatly reduced splash radius.

There is the key. Specific target vs area effect.

If you're target is a single object be it shore battery, navy ship, HQ, etc, then the AP and SAP will pound for pound (or kg for kg) do more damage to that OBJ.  If your goal is to help with taking down a factory, town, or other such target that will benefit from an area effect then the GP bombs are better.

Unfortunately the "pound for pund" efficiency is in most cases academical. The 1600lbs less weight of the AP bomb don't make the Stuka more survivable or let you get that much quicker to your target, especially when compared to planes like the F4U-D or P-47N and so on.
So if you are chosing the Stuka at all, it only makes sense to take the bigger bomb with about 20% more damage and a much greater damage radius.

From a purely MA gameplay point of view, there is not much incentive to take the AP bombs, respectively to choose the light/medium bombers that carry them over the usual common bombtrucks

If we ever get the 1000kg AP bomb for the 190F, I suspect we might have a new CV-buster.
You started this thread and it was obviously about your want and desire in spite of your use of 'we' and Google.

well just for the hell of it i tested climb rate in stuka with each.. on auto climb, 50% fuel, thru 1000 ft:

1800kg gp = ~1115 fpm
1000kg ap = ~1475 fpm

so say a 10 minute run, you're gonna get an extra 3-4k alt.. if the extra alt is useful is another thing altogether.

Attacking a battleship without AP should count as paint damage.

Unfortunately the "pound for pund" efficiency is in most cases academical. The 1600lbs less weight of the AP bomb don't make the Stuka more survivable or let you get that much quicker to your target, especially when compared to planes like the F4U-D or P-47N and so on.

AP bombs were designed to drive deep belown the decks of the ship and detonate below the water line, sinking the ship.
GP bombs detonate on the surface and shouldn't do as much damage
