My question is why you feel the need to carry a knife in school? Protection from other people carrying knives?

Funny thing about a knife being considered a weapon? one can do lots more physical damage with a simple bic pen or a pencil, or even just their car key, than they can with a little pocket knife.

Even if you find it's legal from the school conduct codes to carry a knife. If you are adjudicated for any reason by the campus police or campus quasi legal system. You may find yourself quickly guilty without recource to proving your innocense. At anytime another student seeing your knife can report to the campus they feel threatened by the existance of the knife in your pocket. Then it will take on a life of it's own.

You will find colleges in the US post one set of rules but, operate on another that suits their frame of reference at any moment.

Rule of thumb on college campuses. Don't scare the natives. They are vindictive and their legal systems are rigged to screw you the moment a complaint is filed. Nothing is tollerated but compliance unless you have a good lawyer.

Read at this web site to understand why you need to be very carful.

Or even just the car!

Had a friend once almost get in trouble for having a shovel in the back of his truck. His response "I could do more damage with the truck...." which then left the school official  :O as he drove off.

Wonder how they would react to the one on my hood, then...

I remember the good old days where most boys in grade school had pocket knives on them.  Wasn't a problem back 25-30 years ago.  Now your expelled :headscratch:

I can remember it was pretty common to see a shotgun or rifle in the window of somebody's truck at school

You may want to be very very careful.  Give your campus police/security a ring or better yet show up in person and verify with them.  Every campus is different and every campus has their own set of rules.

I recently graduated from undergrad at a school in Springfield, MA which is a top 10 most dangerous city in the US.  My school had its own police force which were rotated cops through the Massachusetts state police.  I never felt I needed to carry a weapon as they constantly patrolled the campus and were actual state police officers.  I actually ordered domino's one night and when I went outside the guy was being arrested by the campus police.  Dont ask me what this guy did but I got my food free that night needless to say.  8 cops were pulled up, all campus police and had guns drawn.  A few of them had shotguns drawn on top of that.  I remember seeing them pull a rifle what looked like a m16 out of the guy's trunk but probably was a AR-15 being that it looks like a m16.  Not trying to start the gun topic in here but just dont want encourage questioning on what it might be.

You shouldnt have to feel the need to carry a knife around on campus.  That can only encourage questioning if others see it.  Remember when going to a college, everyone comes from different backgrounds and raised differently.  They may feel extra edgy when they see someone carrying a weapon around.  At my undergrad, you werent allowed to carry a weapon period.  No knives, guns, etc.  Hell kids were kicked off campus for having knives on my campus.  They werent necessarily kicked out of school but werent allowed to live in the dorms.

Just saying, if you feel the need to carry a weapon in college, you may want to rethink where you go to school.  Not trying to stir an argument here but you should feel safe where you go to school considering I am assuming you take everything into consideration where you decide to go to study.  Most schools should want you to feel comfortable considering that is where you will live 80% of the year assuming you dont live at home.  I am sorry but if I can feel completely safe on a campus located in a city ranked in the top 10 as most dangerous in the country and I didnt carry a weapon, you shouldnt need to carry one either.

I hope that was put there to make us all chuckle...

Why does a knife have to be considered a weapon?  Can't it be just a tool?  What if I need to open a package, trim my shoelaces or open a letter?

Has it actually come to this in our world?  Must folks fill out forms, in triplicate, just to have a pocket knife?

With the huge amount of common items that can double as deadly weapons, there really isn't any reason to carry something that will get you into trouble.

Anyone in a higher learning curriculum should possess enough brainpower to find a solution that exists within the rules of the campus.

I usually have a Buck 110 in my pocket, never had any problems.  Just remember to tell the truth if a cop asks you if you have any weapons on you, I had the smallest swiss army knife available confiscated in college because they considered it a deadly weapon.  They decided to arrest me over it nearly 2 years after the fact.
If I had a gun with 3 bullets and I was locked in a room with Bin Laden, Hitler, Saddam and Zipp...  I would shoot Zipp 3 times.

Would it be safer to carry a piece of obsidian around so I can knapp an edge on it if I need to cut something?

I cannot believe that I am actually reading posts about a pocket knife being a deadly weapon.  Anything can be a deadly weapon if used to assail someone.  I'm sure one could do some damage with a pizza cutter if so inclined.  I could use the shovel or hi-lift jack on my hood to create some damage.  Does that make them deadly weapons?  I could also use the shackles on my bumper as a set of brass knuckles, now that I think about it.  Even better, I could use the cable from my winch as a garrote.

Cell phone, wallet, keys and pocket knife.  This is standard inventory when I walk out the door for work every morning.

How and when did people get so nanny-fied?
