USC Football worse off now than ever before...
« on: January 01, 2013, 11:47:29 AM »
Not that I am a USC fan but it pains me to see a coach like Lane Kiffin be able to survive like a freaking cock roach all the time. At least he is finally admitting that he sucks as a coach. My 9 year old son could call plays better than he did this past season.

http://sports.yahoo.com/news/georgia-tech-beats-southern-california-000238605--ncaaf.html

''It was a really surprising day,'' Southern California coach Lane Kiffin said. ''Coming down and turning the ball over, and with third-down efficiency, we really found no rhythm on offense. I thought we'd play much better on offense today. The storyline really came down to our inefficiency on offense, and obviously it starts with the head coach.''

I dont know if I agree with you on this to be honest.  It is not always the coach's fault.  Matt Barkley had a terrible season, a supposed Heisman contender, and yet he faltered horribly.  Have the best WR group in the country and when the QB cant perform well, they dont perform well.  The loss of Matt Kalil was a huge loss which is obvious.  I dont think Lane Kiffin is a bad coach, look what he did last year but he does have some character issues.  The defense had some serious issues especially on the defensive line.  The offensive line like I mentioned before had issues as well.  Everything starts with both those units.  I never agreed with them being a preseason #2 as there were serious questions with those units.  National contenders have good to great offensive and defensive lines.  In that bowl game,  Wittek looked terrible.  The reactions coming off the field several times by Marquis Lee was the story of the game.  He missed wide open throws that a QB should make, especially a QB that goes to USC.  USC pulls in quality recruits every year and Wittek obviously is not the answer.  The game surely would have gone differently had Barkley been playing.

I dont think your can say that the game would have Surely gone different, its college football you never know what is gonna ghappen and that makes it great. I liked USC before this circus that just went down between the tweets and the players acting like they did and not showing up,  that all starts  with the headcoach and his personality.

Al Davis canned him after the fourth game in his second season as head coach of the Raiders. Davis
Was frustrated with his game day decisions. He wasn't ready for the NFL.

Kiffin's father (Monte) quit as the defensive coordinator a couple days ago......probably more age related, as you can only coach for so long.

Losing Barkley at the end of the season without a good backup for a passing team is not the head coaches fault.
Recruiting was the strength of the previous head coach, Pete Carroll. Recruiting top players is one of the top priorities of a good head coach. We will see how Kiffin does in the next couple years. USC will replace him if he does not take them to a top bowl.
Everything is funny as long as it is happening to somebody else.

Definite toolshed move.

I didn't even understand it.  UT and USC are equals in tradition, etc.  I would imagine the fan base at UT is a bit more loyal, and being in the SEC recruits a fair amount on it's own.  Only reason to have bolted the way he did was sensing that he was about to be canned anyway.

I think he bolted Tennessee because there was a threat of a NCAA investigation into the Vol's recruiting practices while he was coach.

I live in Tennessee though I don't root for the Vols. When Kiffin came to Tennessee Al Davis warned the fans, boosters and University that Kiffin was a bad apple and would stick it to'm. When he said as much almost everyone in Tennessee took it with a grain of salt since it was Al Davis. In hind sight he was right on.

He was disruptive to the Raiders, to the Vols and now it isn't going so well at USC.

He isn't the sharpest tool in the tool chest.  An example was his recruiting of a 13 year old.

You know Kiffin isnt the first coach to do that either.

Look at Les Miles, a well respected football coach at LSU and he already offered a scholarship to a 14 year old in 8th grade.  http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/8199497/soon-8th-grader-dylan-moses-offered-lsu-tigers-scholarship.

In a sense while his move from UT to USC is a bad character move, USC is where he spent a good majority of his time as a coach.  Some people have that sense of a dream job and being that he spent so much time at USC was probably a reason.  Every coach has their dream job school.

Being where USC is though, it is much easier location to recruit.  There are fewer top premier schools to recruit against compared to the SEC.  UT isnt a premier SEC school especially when recruiting against Bama, LSU, UF, South Carolina, and against the ACC schools in the area as well including FSU and Clemson.  USC has to compete against far fewer schools for those elite recruits that prefer to stay on the west coast.  California puts out a lot of good recruits and many of them grow up watching schools like USC and Oregon.

Im curious who UT will bring in as a coach.  That program is a mess.  Going be a job and a half whoever they hire.  Not exactly a situation Id want to go into being that its a storied program and in a mess.  With Bray going pro, its a real big mess.  I hear Fulmer wants to return to coaching.
