Did Spit XVI flight model change recently?
« on: January 02, 2013, 11:05:16 AM »
Over the last 3-4 days I've been getting a lot of weird stalls, mostly at the top of loops. She seems to want to almost flat spin. Feels like I have ordnance strapped on or a full drop tank even though I don't. I've been flying the XVI pretty much exclusively since I joined back in April and never had this occur. Anyone else notice or experience this?...Take it easy.

Spits have always had a tendancy to do this when nose high at low speeds  in AH

It is really noticeable in the Mk I.  Later Spits, particularly the Mk VIII and Mk XVI have a power to weight ratio that helps them avoid it most of the time.  The Spit XIV oddly has more problems with it despite having even more power.

Counter-rotating prop makes it a bit tougher over the top, especially if youre used to using rudder to get your nose on.

Try burning the TOP tank first...don't forget to switch BEFORE you run out of TOP TANK FUEL or you'll die a lot.

Good to know!!

I know with the 51s you want to burn Aft first situationally, is there any kind of definitive list of burn order floating around out there?

Or perhaps you could be convinced to share more of this sorcery?

(works very well on the V and IX....shhhhhhhh.  Midway knows this too.  Others will claim heresy...)  Fly a IX against someone in a 16 for about 2 weeks and you'll be a perk farming Optimus Prime (I don't know what that means but my 10 year old son says it all the time about things that used to be called "beast").
PS-Im still waiting on my KC invite to the award winners dinner.  Daddkev wants to play naked paintball...with goggles

I don't think there's a "definitive" list, because everyone has personal preferences. Some people take bare minimum gas to begin with, others roll with full tanks. I can't say much about other aircraft off-hand, but in the F4U-1 and 1A I usually recommend:

Roll at 100% fuel
Burn Left Wing to 50%
Switch to Right Wing until it's at 75%
Alternate Left/Right wings in 25% increments. How much you leave is personal preference, but I usually stop at 25% LW 50% RW, however you want to leave minimum 25% in the right wing, and it should always be higher than the left.
Once you have your wings burned go to the external if you've got it. Otherwise, switch to Main and keep it there until you need to dip into the wing tanks.

This helps balance the aircraft against the torque of the engine and gives it a little more stability. Corsairs also LOVE to take main fuel hits, so that 25% in the right tank gives you a nice reserve.
Ron White says you can't fix stupid. I beg to differ. Stupid will usually sort itself out, it's just a matter of making sure you're not close enough to become collateral damage.

So THATS why I can't fly the HOGs!!!  I will remember this.

Yes, burning the top tank first will help with the stall on a Spitfire.  However, make sure if you're in a Spit 8 you burn the wing tanks first THEN the top tank.

I manually switch back and forth until engaged then I switch to burn the top tank first.  Fuel leaks are crippling in a Spitfire.  ;)
