Played it off and on also, great game, hated the gate camps which I relate to the GV spawn camps here, corps hanging out at a low sec gate, chatting the night away; wait here comes another one .........besides that plenty of interesting stuff to dive into, like the fact they keep your bio and rank for long periods of time so you don't have to start over when you return.

I tried this game a long time ago. Was fun, but I wasn't in a corp so things were slow and PvP hopeless at my skill and state in the game.

But these days I am looking for new games to try, so I may re-try Eve. It does help casual players a bit that the toons keep gaining skills even when you are not logged in.

What is the bbs system like for eve online?  Does it have a good set of docs for reading up on how the game works, and not just tutorials?

I've been considering making the jump to eve from AH for a while now.  Financially, it's a joke, both prices are very good, it's just the time factor involved and I can only really invest time in one or the other.

In a lot of ways gameplay reminds me of EQ1.
Yes ..there's jerks and some hunt in packs.

Low security areas are just that .. don't take somethin you can't afford to lose.
Now and then there are hunting parties that go out just to break gate camps ..
..not for the new player due to time it takes to gain the skills just to fly a ship capable of breaking webs and dealing enough damage..and surviving the initial break in.

Sort of like a Hate raid in early EQ :) ..except the mobs are players.
When you first start in EVE you're in an NPC corporation ..
Just monitorin text in corp chat is a great way to pick up info on what is what.
Now an then a group (Fleet) will setup and go hunt gate campers or greifers
..fun to 'listen' to altho I am still learning just the acronyms .. much less what capabilities there are out there.

The more I learn the more I find out I need to learn.
It can be a casual game ..just drop in, mine a bit or do a mission, return to station.
It can also take over your life building a career runnin like yer hair is on fire.
I am goin at my own pace .. goof off a lot, kinda focusing on mining initially because it's ..well .. easy.
Pretty much.
Altho even my mining barge has hobgoblin drones for the pesky rats that show up now an then.
And I always keep Home up as next destination ..so if things get hairy I can just punch warp and scream outta there.

My main is Rip Rap .. I abandoned Grayy Eagle ..was good to learn the interface and such but e's a bit screwed up :)

Decided if ima focus on mining I may as well min-max a character for it ..Rip Rap is it.
Turns out you can change attributes once a year after your initial two free tries at it.
So ..miner is primary memory, secondary intelligence ..some of his mining skills are learned now at 4x multiplier rate :)

He is ssssmokin ..altho when I drive a Destroyer with him, it kinda wallows around like a '60's Cadillac :)

But the boy can burn a rock!

cool Narsus :)
I will add you also.

Was a bit surpsised when I dropped in as Rip Rap the first time ..
.. landed in a different starter corporation .. different station..
..whole different crowd of people and feel.

I joined the Eagle Burst Security corp ..first invite I got that didn't feel like an outright scam.

Based out of Slays star system.. kinda neat to have pretty decent asteroid belt systems right outside the front door :)

My toon is now 3 days old. Still doing all the profession tutorials to see what I like. Didn't even know you could modify the stats of a character. Now I need to find what stats a fighter/explorer needs.

Exploring/using probes tutorial gave me a hard time when I tried playing a few years back. If you run into any issues there's some great youtube videos on it.

Seems like it might be interesting. Wonder how much it costs to play?

EVE costs 15/mo
... I signed up for their 1 month deal for 10 and they let me have a Destroyer
..had to choose one of four they offered.
The destroyers are empire based ...may take longer to learn to fly one that isn't from your chars empire.

on planning a character:
There is a 3rd party app called EVEmon that is invaluable at planning a character out.
To the point that I am deleting Grayy Eagle and goin with Rip Rap as my main.

Read about a group of thugs callin themselves the 'New Order' ..
..they charge miners 10million a year to be allowed to mine in any high security area in the game.
They call it a 'license' and you must swear loyalty to them in your bio in game .. ROFL.
A protection racket ..LOL .. right out of Chicago in the '30's ..nothing new and will end up the same.

Very self-righteous bunch of thugs.
Of course they have nowhere near the numbers to actually enforce every high security zone in the game.
If I am lucky perhaps I will be skilled enough to be part of the fleet that hunts them for laffs :)

Why delete a character? Skills increase is just time based, so starting a new toon is like selecting new skills to the training queue of your current character, except in the latter you get to keep everything you trained so far. No?

Because I am a dweeb .. of course :)
I probably should have just jammed with that character
..the reason I didn't was EVEmon showed me by re-distributing my attributes
it would actually save me *days* in real time to train the skills I need

.. if that doesn't fit the definition of nerdy geek dweeb type I don't know what does :)

And yes .. my first char had about 10million isk and buncha 'stuff' already
..it was stupid to just feed him to the bio-mass processor ..
..but the sound byte as he was 'reprocessed' was funny :)

What can I say .. I am easily amused :)

The good ship 'Rock Star' based out of Jarizza, mining deep in the Gelham system.
She's a Retriever class mining barge running strip mining turrets and turns about 4 million per run profit.

Good times :)

Nice!

I'm a mission runner mostly for farming ISK. L4 missions get me and average of 30-50 mil per run. Really good ones can net me more than 100 mill with salvage. I'm soloing L4's in my Rattlesnake. Pretty expensive ship (a billion+ with modules), but it had paid for itself after a few evenings.
