delving into EVE online ..
« on: January 14, 2013, 07:04:33 AM »
Grayy Eagle, starship pilot:

'I'll be yer Huckleberry'

In game screenshot, taken at a Federal Navy Station with my ship in the bay behind me.
Bein a 'spacer' type, I figure he would have a deep tan and tried to match his features to
my own from decades ago ...ya .. my hair was jet black when I was younger due primarily to
Cherokee ancestry ..got my first white hairs when I was 17 and had that whole 'distinguished gentleman'
silver sideburns thing happenin by the time I was in my late 20's ..fooled a lot of people into thinkin I was
far more mature than I was :)

Anyway ...
Very epical space based game ;)
Pretty cool graphics .. it's a 'sandbox' game .. devs provide the toys, what you do with 'em is your affair
altho I hear you can get banned for being a total jerk like any other MMO online.

I only just downloaded it last nite and workin thru the tutorial missions atm.
The tutorials are pretty well done, you gain skills, funds, and even ships/ship equipment as you go thru them.

At first it felt a bit clunky not being able to directly control my ship ..
(you are Kirk, not the helmsman/tactical officer/weapons officer, etc), you give the orders and the ship does it.
Combat can be a bit hectical while learnin the interface
..locking up four fast movers intent on shooting holes in your ship is a bit of fun :)

Yes ..things go much better if you lock your weapons onto a hostile target *then* pull the trigger :)

So . . I am off to learn more 'stuff' an get more 'stuff' ..so far just workin with rail guns
'go ahead, make my Day' ..yaa baby.

Nice! EVE is a lot of fun for sure. Just never fly anything you can't afford to lose ;)

I've tried twice to "get into" EVE. I think it's a great game but it never kept my attention for more than a week or so. I think a lot of that had to do with the fact that I was running alone and not with friends/a corp, though.

tried it a little last summer. It's an interesting game for sure, with a big problem. If you go it alone, all you can do is hisec stuff for an unbearable amount of time. this game is a capitalist game (financially motivated) not a bad thing, other than it takes way too long to have enough funds to compete with players who have the money to buy and build ships that are invulnerable to the lone poor miner trying to make an honest living just minding his own business. Hisec is extremely boring and has no valuable minerals, so you need to venture out into losec for the better stuff and then you inevitably are destroyed by pirates and have to start all over again.

way too much time involved to be interesting for me. probably would by OK if you work with other people to protect you and learn from. just a steep learning curve going at it alone.

I have been on and off the game for 7 years now, currently I am back on.

If you want someone in game to bounce ideas off of (advice, corp stuff, combat, set-ups, etc), I am glad to help. Send me a PM and we'll get in touch in game.

I posted awhile back but no one responded in terms of this.  Sony has released a new game that is going to be completely intertwined into the EVE online real time game.  It is called DUST 514 and I believe it is still in beta.  I tried it out, its actually very interesting game.  It has a battlefield feel to it in terms of classes but each item is completely able to be modified and upgraded with money earned from the battles.  The players are hired by the EVE pilots, etc.  Its an interesting concept and hopefully it doesnt get screwed up as I think it is promising.

Played a bit of eve with some of my old squaddies. Fun game. If I could I'd play both, but the time and money I can't commit right now. Definitely one of the best graphics and interface of any MMO IMHO.

DUST is up an runnin .. I am nowhere near proficient enough in the game to know very much about it except the little I have read so far.

Workin thru exploration tutorial atm .. finished the basic military, advanced military, and mining tutorials.
They give you a ship and toys for each by the time you finish 'em and you make a bit of coin to boot.

I like that the combat is not first person twitch shooter stuff
.. it feels more like Picard sayin to Worf 'Tactical on Viewer Mr. Worf'
...'lock 125mm railgun battery' ..'Fire at will!'

(poor will get's toasted)

-adjusts tunic-
'Well done everyone ..time for sammich!'

Or some such.

Oh yeah, once you do all the tutorials you'll end up with a packed hangar, or do like I did and sell them all and buy a better ship!  :aok

Oh god.... EvE took about 4yrs of my life. I still have a char and account but its not active atm. I got a bit burned out in null sec with all the little Hitlers and their daily "call to arms" BS. I probably left about 5bil in assets at that station and have no idea if we even still own it. I think I handed out 13bil isk the day I logged out.

If it wasn't for aces high I'd be playing EVE online, but this game is like a job and requires 100% free time attention
