Camera security system for my parents
« on: January 20, 2013, 08:03:58 PM »
Guys,

My parents are getting older and they decided to bring a cleaning service in to clean the house once per week. Recently and I don't believe they are imagining things stuff has started to go missing. I need some options on a wireless camera recording system that I can set up through a laptop. Preferably something that records one motion is activated. Any ideas?

I'm using a dash cam no brand name made in China in my heavy truck on the road recording cycles and when i'm parked for cargo/diesel theft; i paid approx 100$, but works well, good quality video, has motion sensor and infrared for night; cigarette lighter power cord charging battery. This comes with 2GB card, but with 32GB is recording over 36-48 hours cycles.Imop, would work in house also, smaller than a pack of cigarettes can hide it anywhere.

should be able to get a nannny cam I think is what they are called.  I have seen then on Maury povich, they go in the inside of a teddy bear or something, I would assume they would be tied to a laptop or something.  A railroad worker from west virginia was staying in the same hotel as we were when we got booted out of our apt, had almost a pound of weed stolen out of his room from cleaners.

speaking with quite a bit of experience with this ... cleaners, carers, anyone you dont know well and let into the home of someone vulnerable ... sadly some of them are scum and I guarantee stuff will go missing at some point. Ive seen houses stripped by these people over the course of a few years.

you should do a full inventory with lots of photos and check it regularly. with agencies that send a bunch of different people over you'll need to do it more regularly and its far, far more likely to happen and almost impossible to prove. make sure that they sign in on a guest book. make sure that they understand that you check everything, and that you will pursue criminal and civil proceedings to the full extent of the law if anything dodgy happens. at the extreme end, 24h agency care, you basically have to treat the home as a public place.

cameras are great if you can conceal them properly.

Check out ebay. They have plenty of cameras for sale. Type something like the following search string "dvr camera motion", plenty should pop up.

A multi room baby monitor system with sound and a nice color display where the cleaning crew can clearly see it would be a great deterrent.

I use one of these for various purposes and it works great.  Even though the website says it only supports a 8GB card it really supports up to 16GB.  Just plug it into a wall socket and you are good to go.  No PC hookup needed to record.  The great thing is that unlike GoPro cameras, it records in 30 minute file chunks and when the memory card fills up it will delete the oldest file and keep on recording.  That way you can let it run for weeks/months until you need to pull the memory card and review the videos.

You can get one of those 4 camera deals at Newegg for around 250 . I got 2 of them . Put one up at my place and one up at my mother's . The only thing is the cameras that come with the systems are cheep and don't work real well after dark . They well hold up to three month's of video before it resets itself again .

Another idea is to buy a bunch of cheap fake dome cameras with a battery powered flashing LED.

Back a while ago a self-storage business had problems with local kids breaking into their units. The problem stopped after the fake camera's were installed.
